The front office and staff seem to really stick with Vilma.
I understand he may be a coach in the locker room.
Would rather he retire and the Saints hire him as a coach.
Dunno if he has guaranteed money tied up or something.

By re-signing Meachem, it seems to me like the coaches aren't sold on one of the WRs; a betting man would say it is Andy Tanner.

I would agree but Tanner and Meachem are apples and oranges.

Isn't it suppose to be the best 53 to make the roster not who helpt u win the superbowl years ago but is at the end of their career? Time to let the youngbloods lead if the old ones cant play anymore. Vilma has his leadership replacement in lofton. And vaccaro will be the leader of the whole d.

Hey, people!! Vilma has been designated to the return to action slot of IR. He'll be back. This clears a roster spot and gives him a chance to get to 100% while remaining with the team.

I agree with this. Tanner is solid, but not really explosive. Meachem has the abilities, and of course they already know how he fits into the system. But he's so sporadic that I'm having a difficult time getting excited about him.

Still, if he sticks I would think he takes Tanner's place also.

Re: Vilma to IR

Meachem if healthy was always a deep threat, so even if he's not getting the ball he's stretching the field. All the more open space for the rest of the weapons...

Exactly! The Saints would alternate sending Meachem and Henderson deep so each remained fresh. They would only be targeted a few times combined, but when they did it was usually a big play, or when they weren't it drew coverage away from the inside and shorter routes.

I really wish we used that pick on a linebacker now

So we wasted a return to action slot on an over the hill has been.

Vilma to IR

At this stage in Vilmas career, Hawthorne is a better LB, this is a major injury for vilma...
If Hawthorne stays healthy Vilma will not come off IR to play which couldn't possibly happen until week 9.

He is being stashed for retirement and to free up a roster spot.

Re: Vilma to IR

meachem deep is waste of money. thats all he can do.

Defense is is need of a player then again the OL could use a player also.

PT goes down we are sunk in the run game.

Wow amazing what 1 spot does to ya

Re: Vilma to IR

Vilma hasn't been top shelf since that sports hernia thing a few years ago.
He never really got his leverage back. He was already undersized, which
worked for him, and us, with his speed to the ball. He hasn't been that guy
for quite a while. It seems his ailments have begun to compound themselves.
I hope he can get back to 8 tackles a game. I'd be satisfied with 4.

Re: Vilma to IR

Vilma was put on the return IR because he was elgible. No other player was a candidate or worthy of the designation. He may come back and contribute. He may not. Having him available to return can only be a positive for the Saints. As far as Meachem goes, all we've heard from the SD media is how he's physically done. Clearly, that's not the case or the Saints would not have signed him. If healthy, and I assume he is, he's absolutely an upgrade over Tanner.

Comparing Meachem to Tanner is apples to oranges... Way different type of receivers

Yep, and why not. If we get bombarded with injuries he'll be quite welcome down the stretch.

@MikeTriplett: #Saints David Hawthorne could be upgrade over Jonathan Vilma if he returns to peak form | http://t.co/JYiJbAHvzZ http://t.co/TRaF0g0NkB

Hawthorne did look good in the preseason, he read the QB came off his assignment and almost got that pick against the Texans...

I think Hawthorne is better against the pass and Lofton is better against the run

I'm not convinced Lofton is better versus the run, but its probably close.
