Saints Defense for Real?!
 

The Saints Defense took a quarter to get started but looked pretty good throughout the game. Totaling 3 Sacks by newly acquired Parys Haralson, Akiem Hicks, and Junior Galette. Defense also held Atlanta on 4th and Goal, Vacarro tipped Ryan's pass intended for Gonzalez then Harper intercepted it in the end zone. Saints also lost Tyrann Walker to an unknown leg injury he was carted out.

Overall i think the Defense carried this game. Look forward to watching this defense the rest of the season and see how they improve.

Saints also only allowed 88 rushing yards. 50 were from 1 Steven Jackson run, so overall a pretty good run defense.

I am not going to say they are for real just yet. However, they were much improved from last year's nightmare unit so I am hopeful.

That last play confused me so I knew it confused the falcons, all but one defensive lineman played off and then crashed the line off snap! I think we have a DC

Long season guys but I liked what I saw from this defense today. Gallette and Cam looked good, Parys will be a FORCE and the game isn't too big for Vaccaro. etc. Hopefully we get Martez back soon.

Yes, this D has the potential to be 'for real'.

I've said it a dozen times in these forums. Atl suffers from the same thing Hou does.

Coach = Can't take you all the way....

The bad thing about that excuse.... You can't draft out of it and injury won't save you. When the coach is weak, the play calling is weak, and the team in the end is weak.

The new kid at NT looked good too. Saw him make a nice play on the outside. We have some young studs for the future on DL in Hicks, Jordan and Johnson.

I actually thought that both teams were playing a "their offense can't hurt is if they are not on the field" strategy.

D made some plays, and should get better. Not saying they are for real yet. But, this was a good team they played.

I think your coach and QB killed you, your coach gambling on 4th down YET AGAIN when everything in the universe is screaming at him not to do it, take the field goal and the onside kick, the Saints special teams under Greg McMahon are TERRIBLE, that was a slam dunk to win the game. I guess your coach does not watch any film of the teams he plays against.

Your coach behaves like a cheap Biloxi gambler with a gambling problem, pawning his mother's wedding ring. You give him a 4th down, he can't refuse, no matter how low the odds situationally. That's how people lose their houses and ruin marriages in the real world.

I knew we had won the game the minute it was first and goal from the 7. I said "they're gonna go for it on fourth and not get it" and high-fived the people in the seats around me, and I wound up being COMPLETELY RIGHT.

If you want to blamethat on a "conservative philosophy" then be my guest, your coach has a gambling problem and needs to seek professional help. You will not win a Super Bowl with him.

And the QB they call "Matty Ice" was anything but "ice" he seemed to be really frustrated and thwarted and ticked off, not able to figure anything out that was coming at him.

When Brees gets a rush, he stutter-steps around it, or sometimes even senses it coming from BEHIND and steps away. Matty Ice just seemed to be taking off running for his life. And throwing the ball away. Intentional grounding by not getting outside the hash marks is a pretty humiliating penalty in the modern NFL. Rookie quarterbacks routinely avoid this penalty as a matter of course. The Falcons should not be paying a lot of money for that kind of play.

They played better than even those of us who thought they would be ok thought they would play.


Is out defense going to be ok this season? Too soon to tell. We did very well against a strong offense with a lot of weapons... I would say that after week for they can be rubber stamped as good, bad, or ok... We have some injuries to deal with and we need to see how we play against teams that can plan... By week 4 there will be three game tapes out there to study and plan with.

The best part is that the league is an IDP based league with members of of an Atlanta Falcons site. I am facing the one of my biggest haters this first week and he has a pretty damned good team. I think I have the best in the league. So far our scores are far higher than all others this week.

I'll carry the Who Dat flag and win their league.

I was hoping Detroit would use him as a running-back and not just as another receiver ... he'll average close to 100yds a game if they continue to use him like that, just like he did in Miami, :mrgreen:.

Yeah, thanks. I was kinda' skeptical at first, but he'll win me over with more performances like that & by staying healthy ... Reggie & Joique Bell looked good enough back there yesterday, I may even predict wins against Green Bay and Chicago this year, :lol:.

From what I saw, the D looks like a more cohesive unit and are aligned with Ryan's scheme. They look like a team now instead of a bunch of players trying to figure out what the hell their supposed to do.

Just think how much better (if there is such a thing) Calvin will look when defenses will have to bring a safety down to cover Reggie out of the backfield.

Got a video up on NFL.com about our defense being "real" or not. not hard to look better when ur the so-called worst. just imagine when foster and tez gets back and our offense puts more pressure on the opposing team.

Maybe but they've had more success under Mike Smith than they've ever had before. And while I'm saying good things about them, (GAHHH!!) Matt Ryan is a very good QB. I know his record in the playoffs is terrible but I don't think it's because of him. It's a team game after all.
