Saints defense beats the Falcons

Call it your basic Saints vs. Falcons game. What else would you expect? Close game, Saints win, as they always seem to do under Sean Payton against Atlanta.

What you had to love was that the defense won it. While the offense did some good things, 23 points is often not enough to beat the Falcons. It was, thanks to the New Orleans defense.

The defense forced two turnovers, including the game-clinching interception by Roman Harper on a tip by Kenny Vaccaro in the 23-17 triumph. Of course, you must also credit the outstanding pressure by Curtis Lofton, who was pulling on Matt Ryan as he was releasing the football.

That was a little bit too much bending at the end of the game, but a great start to the season...

I think that harkenss back to the poll The Oak posted last week. Whether giving up points or giving up yards qualifies a bad defense, or worst defense in history of the NFL.

I was on the "giving up points" side because a team could give up a ton of yards but stop an offense in the red zone and those yards would be insignificant.

We shut down the falcons when it counted. That's all I care about.

Well they was famous for doing this under Gregg Williams to, give up about 400 yards of offense but the opposing team would only score like 14 pts.

But theirs a little difference between that team and the Rob Ryan team.

It's nice to say we did it when it counts.

We stopped the last big play BUT we gave up too many big plays - still, like last year. :(

Well one of them was broken coverage I think.

Its not like we didnt match it, like the Kenny Stills big play.

I still felt a lot more confident with this defense than last year.
Last years defense was like watching slow death from a flesh wound - it stunk!
No matter how much I sugar coated it, that defense wasn't going to stop anyone.

When SP fired Spags, I actually felt relief.
If our defense can limit "big plays" to just every other week, it would be a huge improvement.

For some reason I was not holding my breath with Hartley was kicking field goals today. Good job Garrett.
