Saints defense beats the Falcons

Call it your basic Saints vs. Falcons game. What else would you expect? Close game, Saints win, as they always seem to do under Sean Payton against Atlanta.

What you had to love was that the defense won it. While the offense did some good things, 23 points is often not enough to beat the Falcons. It was, thanks to the New Orleans defense.

The defense forced two turnovers, including the game-clinching interception by Roman Harper on a tip by Kenny Vaccaro in the 23-17 triumph. Of course, you must also credit the outstanding pressure by Curtis Lofton, who was pulling on Matt Ryan as he was releasing the football.

That was a little bit too much bending at the end of the game, but a great start to the season...

I think that harkenss back to the poll The Oak posted last week. Whether giving up points or giving up yards qualifies a bad defense, or worst defense in history of the NFL.

I was on the "giving up points" side because a team could give up a ton of yards but stop an offense in the red zone and those yards would be insignificant.

We shut down the falcons when it counted. That's all I care about.

Well they was famous for doing this under Gregg Williams to, give up about 400 yards of offense but the opposing team would only score like 14 pts.

But theirs a little difference between that team and the Rob Ryan team.

It's nice to say we did it when it counts.

We stopped the last big play BUT we gave up too many big plays - still, like last year. :(

Well one of them was broken coverage I think.

Its not like we didnt match it, like the Kenny Stills big play.

I still felt a lot more confident with this defense than last year.
Last years defense was like watching slow death from a flesh wound - it stunk!
No matter how much I sugar coated it, that defense wasn't going to stop anyone.

When SP fired Spags, I actually felt relief.
If our defense can limit "big plays" to just every other week, it would be a huge improvement.

For some reason I was not holding my breath with Hartley was kicking field goals today. Good job Garrett.

what never helped Spags defense is the fact that it never complimented the offense and vis versa. I was worried about Spags defense because it was so much like Gary Gibbs defense, the end result was............it was exactly like Gibbs defense which resulted in a 8-8 and 7-9 season.

When Rob Ryan came in, big part of his defense was to compliment the offense and vis versa. It worked today.

I dunno about Spags, I thought he was an elite DC, perhaps hes nothing more than a smoke and mirror guy that is no better than Gibbs.

Happy for our guys on D. No doubt about it. Happy for Ryan who's looking for redemption too.

It was great to win - even better to have the D play well and to end it the way they did.

Very proud for our D. What a great place to start!

Our defense played great. I was annoyed with our offense in having to settle for so many field goals. But we got the win and now we move on to the completely demoralized Buccaneers. LOL!

I was too worried about defense to worry about Hartley. Turns out I didn't need to sweat either.

Preseason is like going over a recipe for weeks... You dont know how the cake will turn out until you cook one in your oven with your ingredients.

Week 1 Cake made... Now we can start working on turnovers :)

Let's narrow the focus of this thread down a bit.

Kenny Vaccaro beat the Atlanta Falcons with ONE FINGER.

LOL

Did anyone else get this? I am not sure if, coming from England, this means the same thing.
