The fines aren't working, because the players earn so much. And I have no hard proof but I really do believe that coaches or teams are covering for some of the fines, either under the table, or in other ways (signing bonus, workout bonus etc).

But if defensive players were forced to immediately come out the game for leading with the helmet or making cheap shot hits, I think it would reduce them considerably. Because then the coaches and fans would get mad at the players, instead of celebrating them, it would give the backup player some time to make his mark, which would harm a first-string player a lot more than a fine, and make him think twice about doing it again. Because these fines they get are basically what he spends at "the club" with his posse on a typical Saturday night.

It could be something like a 10 play ejection or something. But the fines are definitely NOT working the way Goodell intends them to work; like everything else he does, it blows up in his face.
Good post, I've been thinking something along these lines in that the NFL should take a page from the NHL after watching the Clay Matthews-hit-on-Kaepernick ... in the NHL, there are two guiding principals in awarding penalties, fines, suspensions, et... "did the player leave their feet" and "was there blood/injury, and if so, how extensive?".

I think a clearly defined level of punishment similar to a 'penalty-box' system would do well in the NFL ... make 'em sit for a predetermined amount of time per infraction & force the team to play someone from the bench (shorthanded like in the NHL probably wouldn't work). We could call it a "millionaires time-out", ... but you're absolutely right, fining millionaires does not work, .

I have to say I'm surprised that we were out 'nastied' by the Bucs early. Much like we set the tone with the Falcons and they were bewildered. I DON'T like the number of hits Drew is taking in the pocket tho. Makes me REALLY nervous!

Yes the Bucs gave the game. But our guys NEVER gave up & they could have very easily. A lot of the people on live chat had just done that.
