Can a working coordinator be hired mid season?

I aksed this question in the 'You Fired' thread but I think it's important enough to get its own thread.

I know that the NFL has hiring rules, but is there any arrangement that can be made where a working coordinator can be hired mid-season?

The entire coaching staff (or at least for now the head coach and the two coordinators) needs to be fired today. They have created an embarrasment of this Saints (dis)organization. The front office and other can be dealt with later, but Haslett, McCarthy, and Venturi need to be put out of our collective misery now.

I know who I want to replace them: Romeo Crennel, the defensive assistant head coach of the Pats. He and Weiss have missed their show several times simply because the Pats keep going deep into the playoffs and winning it all.
He's the right guy with the right plan and access to the right people in the Pats organization.

I want the guy and I want him now!

So is it possible to ask permission to interview, and hire him on the spot. I know about the rules about not talking to coordinators while they are still in the playoffs. But does that apply to regular season too?

Waiting will cost us another year. The Pats will be in the SB, if not winning it, so it will be mid February before we can get Crennel in. That's a lost season of screwups from the team, and a last start into free agency and the draft for next year. Not to mention that it takes several months of planning to get the new offseason plan into place.

As I said I want the guy now.

So is it possible to hire a working coordination/assistant head coach mid season?

Generally, no. If his front office lets him leave, then I guess, but the Saints would have to pay the other team for the coach - and it wouldn\'t be cheap. Who would let a coordinator go to another team mid-year?

No. Thats what the Pat staff was griping about last year. All these assistants were getting interviews and the league rules say your season must be completely over before you can be contacted by anyone.

Unless there\'s a decent DC and OC sitting at home right now we\'re stuck with what we have.

I\'d fire Haslet, promote Venturi as interim, appoint Pease as DC, and hold on to McCarthy until Jan 2nd, about 3:15pm.

I\'d then hire a solid GM and let him figure it all out.

I\'m starting to think that my brother had the right idea: Convince Benson to turn over the franchise to his Granddaughter who seems to have somewhat of a clue.

The above plan is disappointing. This year is lost already. It\'s not outside of the realm of possibility that this team won\'t win another game this year. And it\'s almost all scheme and lack of discipline coupled with some really poor personell choices (like both offensive (and I do mean offensive ) tackles).

My fear is that the Saints win enough games just to be less that mediocre. Just enough games to keep blowing sunshine right up the fan\'s butts. Enough games to keep Haslett and his crummy coaching crew around.

Hell, Dan Reeves is sitting at home. Entice him to come finish the season.

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.
