Colston

I wouldn't say that I am concerned, more just questions I am left with after each game.

We are getting away from WR by committee and moving to more of a Graham based passing game with RBs getting more targets than any of our other recievers... .

4.5 Rec /game
62 Yards / game
1 TD this season

He is consistently second or third in targets. Against Chi, Collins had twice as many targets. His yards/rec is lower than all but 2 seasons in his career. His yards/game has never been lower, and he is on pace to have his lowest scoring season.

Jimmy is drawing all of the heat, why isn't Colston drawing more targets?

Since the games on TV rarely show un-targeted receivers can someone that has been at the games give some insight?

Re: Colston

Nobody has seemed to figure out how to take Graham out of the mix yet (coverage wise). When they do, Colston will be there like always. So many targets to try to keep up with in the Saints offense.

Admittedly I haven't rewatched the game yet, but my first impression was that Stills/Toon were on the field a good bit more than they have been. I wonder if Colston's foot is coming into play here.

Re: Colston

There's no concern. Football is all about exploiting mismatches. No one can cover Graham and Sproles. So if Colston production tails off a bit this year, as long as we're winning football games, it's not a big deal... we're just taking what defenses are giving us.

With that said, prior to yesterday's game, Colston was averaging over 7 targets a game. He'll get his eventually... he always does. It's not like he's being ignored this year.

Re: Colston

Against Miami, Colston was invisible in the first half. Someone on this board remarked during halftime that he'd get his once the Phins adjusted to Graham and Sproles, and that's exactly what happened in the second half.

Re: Colston

The offense has changed a little bit and the things below have contributed to less targets for him this year.

-Graham has gotten better so more targets
-Our line has gotten worse than in previous years so we're throwing a lot of screens and quick passes to our rb's
-The play action game isn't what it used to be without the running game so less opportunities for colston to create separation (he's not the fastest guy out there)
-They are making an effort to get stills and toon more involved in the offense which is taking targets away from coltson
-Colston was hurt early in the year and may still be a little iffy

Colston will be fine. He just needs to be ready once the ball comes his way.

We also played against a team that now has one of our former offensive coaches. You don't think Kromer didn't warn the DC about ignoring Colston.
Kromer knows what Colston could do if they concentrated on just Jimmy.

Re: Colston

I am fully on board with exploiting match ups... No one sees me saying "we will lose if we do not get the ball to Colston more"...

Colstons activity is always on my radar due to FF. As with PT who threw up 26 yesterday. :-)

I'm more worried about Moore. Is he rehabbing his hand or is it injured?

Payton was easing him into the season and then he went and got hurt. He is Paytons go to guy. When he hurt his wrist he just looked at it and trotted to the side lines with no indication that he was hurt. Now that is how a man handles an injury! Hurry back we need you son.

Re: Colston

I reckon Colston is suffering alittle with his injury. That is nagging big time.
Also I reckin that Colston will get fialled in by Brees but probably more like in the 3rd and 4th quarters. What I did notice yesterday is that Brees was having to give 2nd and 3rd reads before releasing. I wonder if Colston were sometimes the 1st, p'raps 2nd red but Chicago's coverage was just a little too good.

I think it will all be ok in the end. He'll if he only get 3 opps a game, I am fine with that as long as we are winning.

Re: Colston

Shall we revisit this topic now that the media is catching on to what I saw last week?

Colston total TARGETS in lat two games - 5

Colston single game lowest targets in all other games this season - 6 Atlanta

Receptions against Chicago - 2 Receptions against the Patriots - 1

Last time Colston has less than 3 receptions in a game - Week 4 (2011) the next time going back was week 9 (2009)

TARGETS BY WEEK IN 2013
WK 1 - 6
WK 2 - 7
WK 3 - 8
WK 4 - 8
WK 5 - 2
WK 6 - 3

For what ever reason it is it seems Toon and Stills are getting Colstons targets.

Toon
WK 5 - 1
WK 6 - 4

Stills
WK 5 - 2
WK 6 - 3

Here is what I find even more curious, I carry Colston on my Fantasy team and weeks 1-5 he was listed with a P (probable).. Week 6 there was no P or anything (Full Go).

I honestly think this was/is both developmental and beneficial. The younguns getting chemistry in regular season action with Brees @ CHI & NE as the season rolls, and Colston's foot heals as the season rolls. I am confident in Stills and Toon in the Dome, but the road had me concerned a bit for them.

But when you think of it, Brees on the same page with Colston / Graham / Sproles / Toon / Stills / Watson / Moore later in the season compounded with a healthier Colston is scary...even on the road.

Re: Colston

Without a shifty underneath/possession reciever like Moore, all the other receivers will have a difficult time getting open. Sproles is not fast enough to get separation from a CB and he's too small for most downfield targets. Colston and Graham are too slow, and Stills/Meachem are not explosive enough off the line to gain an advantage inside 10 yards.

We really should be looking for an understudy to Moore rather than more blazing speed that our offensive line can't protect for enough time to utilize.

Tanner is on the Practice Squad.

Re: Colston

There have been several soundbites from the coaching staff about how they see Stills as similar to Moore. We'll see. I don't think he's as slipppery. Offense misses Lance Moore a lot I believe.

Re: Colston

Until they start using him like Moore they don't see a close enough resemblance.
