Re: Hypothetical question about our kicking game

I think we need to change this thread title to "Assuming Hartley is
.... "

...and then we could do a whole string of Assuming threads.
cool idea, huh?

he's talking to you, Tracy Porter

How about a talented kicker? Or an dependable kicker?

It seems that there are no positive adjectives you can match with kicker that don't sound like an oxymoron.

Gimme some help here.

remember Vanderjagt's comments, 15 years ago, about being 'an athlete who kicks', not a kicker?
I think he lasted a season after that and Peyton personally cut him

What the crap do we do with a kicker rocking a 72.7% (which is 29th in the NFL, AND with only 1 attempt greater than 50 yards...which he made...outdoors)? Simple, simple, simple.

Any time we are 4th and whatever from the opponents' 13 yard line to the 33 yard line (home or away), we go for the first down an extra 27.3% to compensate for the missed FGs under 50 yards. Problem solved with sound logic.

When Hartley is on he's really good, problem is when he's not on he's absolutely awful.

I may be the oddball here but I place more value in a punter than a FG kicker, especially when it comes to Morestead.

Field position in the NFL is king.

Morestead's onside kick in SB 44 was invaluable; and as I apply my logic to value, Moresteads ability to give opponents sh1tty field position on a punt and keeping them from putting up a possible 7 points... his value is that over Hartley or any FG kicker by +4 points. Morestead has has 1 punt blocked and 1 punt ret for TD in his career.

Could you start spelling his name right then?:p

Needless to say I disagree completely. Kickers score points and can win or lose a game on one play.

The 2 extra yards Morstead gives us on a whopping 3 or 4 plays per game is virtually meaningless.

I'll take a great Kicker/average Punter over a great Punter/average Kicker any day and everyday.

This head case has got to go.

Re: Hypothetical question about our kicking game

A lot of people complained about drafting Morstead, and trading up in the process, but he has not only been a constant, but an asset.
Drafting a solid kicker is not necessarily a waste, especially considering Chip Vaughan, Al Woods, P. Arnoux, Johnny Patrick, M.Wilson, Greg Romeus and other lower picks that never or rarely contributed

Plus, I don't get a knot in my stomach every time Morstead steps on the field.
