Drew Brees: Johnny Manziel has ability to be a great NFL player
 

"Yeah, absolutely," Brees told foxsports.com when asked if Manziel could be a starter at the NFL level.

The elusive Manziel has done far less running this season than last, when he burst onto the college football season with an SEC record 5,116 total yards -- 1,410 of them rushing -- as a freshman. This year, he's focused more on his development as a passer and has more impressive numbers as a result. Manziel is completing 73 percent of his passes this year, the only starter in the league above 70, and also leads the SEC in passing yards per game (331), touchdown passes (31) and pass efficiency rating (186.9).

"He is a heck of a player," Brees said. "He's fun to watch. He makes all kinds of plays. He's got all the playmaking ability to be a great player. [There are] guys like [Manziel] in this league. Russell Wilson and his ability to run the football and extend plays outside the pocket and throw the ball down the field. Intermediate [routes]. I mean, he can do it all."

Interesting. Obviously just talking about his on-the-field skills. Off the field is the problem.

Good point. His off the field problem could be a problem. I don't want my QB to be a problem off the field.

What do most 19 year old's with fame and a trophy saying they are the best do?

Lets give him time to mature then figure out what the Man is.

The player has great mechanics, vision, and wheels. Living in Texas I watch a good bit of A&M games and I have to say, if I want to watch a college player put on a clinic, I watch Manziel.

He hasnt had any off the field problems that all college students dont have. Hes just a football player so the media blows it up. All I hear about from his peers is how great of a locker room guy he is. Why do people think that all these guys have to be ? If they produce I could not care less what they do off the fiekd as long as they arent criminals.

Does he have the ability? ABSOLUTELY, but its waay early to tell. I have seen Johnny up close and in person & dude is small (by NFL standards) which tells me that he would need to be super accurate with his progressions to make up in height. At the moment, his pocket progression is something that needs work to be effective in the NFL. You might say .. "well Drew and Wilson are undersized too". True but those guys put in serious film study & have above average ability to understand how a defense will attack.

Drew was very kind in his comments of Manziel but I would question whether or not the kid the is willing and ready to put in work at the elite level. Maturity and dedication is just as important.

I just don't see it, IMO just another product of the newest fad to hit the NFL and after being drafted by the Jags or Raiders, he will be out of the league in 2-3 years
