Run Gap Responsibity vs the Read option
 

Pardon me for not being the most knowledgeable when it comes to the read - option. We have been getting killed on this for the better part of two seasons now. I hear a lot of people hear giving Junya a lot of the blame for what occurred running wise in Seattle. My question is this. If his run gap responsibility was to stop the running back at all cost. Shouldn't the responsibility of the QB fall to the person, or persons who is behind him to pick the " option " up..... I saw Hawthorne sit idle on a number of plays where I thought he could have come in right after Wilson decided to keep the ball was best....

Again I don't think I am as frustrated as most in here right now because I counted this as a loss in the beginning of the season. In my opinion we were in best case a 12 - 4, 11-5 type squad... We have done nothing to disprove that so I think im fine.....
Here's what I thought we got in a nutshell in Seattle.... Everybody here remembers the Vikings Championship game and so did they back and forth, high scoring.... but how many of you remember the next time we played them I think it was a defensive struggle, it may have even been a 13 - 7 type game..... We won, we just went about it differently, and they just weren't ready for us to beat them like that..... That's what Seattle did to us... We were so focused on not letting Lynch beat us that we totally forgot that they had a QB too.

I think it more about who is running it and how they preform. Our LBs were smoked in coverage, and I suppose the wash is this. Do you want Hawthorn to sit until Wilson crosses the line of scrimmage or go in once he sees the Read-Option? If Hawthorne goes in to soon Wilson dumps it behind him and its Katy bar the door.

it simple you have to hold your ground in your gap
push push within your lanes defined by the gap

Gap is your house and lane is your drive way.

Stay off the grass

Now the DL for the most part is pretty good at this.

Our OLB are well a little careless and a bit small to enforce it.

ILB while solid in run support are not the greatest in pass coverage. well below average works for me. Thus the pause at attacking the line.

now the CB for the most part have done a solid job all season. white has filled in pretty well with a bone head play in each game so far.

safeties? well a play here or a play there can not cover up the issue that they are over aggressive and bit on any ever fake they seem to see or not. They remind me of speckle trout when they are running. easy to catch.

In the safeties defense most of them are SS and that what they do. the lack of a true FS is getting more obvious with each passing game.

IMO the weakest link for the saints is their pass defense at the second and third levels right between the hashes.

thats why we see some very obvious flat footed moments for this defense.

we did not sell out to stop the run IMO we did what we do best.

Seattle spread us out and exposed us like a ten cent ..... :nono2: against the pass

When Russell was watching the rush he made the decision whether to keep it or hand it off. Clever play in my opinion. But something that can be neutralized.

stay at home and in your lane. once the de screws up and crashes thats when we get burned by wilson.

I hope that whole time they were stuck in Seattle they were studying the Read Option, because I guarantee Carolina is going to be using it all game

Yep. SEVERAL of the back-breaking third downs, or long passing plays where the Saints got burned, Russell was putting it exactly right there, to a guy either right on the hash, or just coming across it TOTALLY wide open.

I still think Robs "new for Seattle" plan had something to do with it.

It is exactly what the Seattle plan was...

We dropped / closed our DE / OLB down the line when they saw run to try and prevent the inside runs which in the past is what killed us against Seattle. I don't think we were prepared for the read option against Seattle at all. Typically those DE and OLB's have assignments to pick up on read options and all we were doing is closing down the line. We don't have an answer to stopping Lynch.

Too many demons to exorcise at once IMO.

The team was tight all first quarter and never got settled.

By the start of the 3rd quarter they knew it was over.

Tuck tail and live to fight again.
