New Orleans Saints fans dish on the losses that lingers

My #1 is the loss to dallas in 2009; 1a is the loss to Atlanta that ended Brees' TD streak.

Katherine asked fans to share their thoughts on which regular season New Orleans Saints loss under the leadership of Sean Payton most bothers them.

With that article Katherine has identified that some people just can't let sh1t go.

You cant move to the future with out letting go of the past.

The Atlanta loss in 2010, missing the chip shot FG to win it and then losing in OT. It cost us the division and then we got blindsided by Seattle in the playoffs

Also the opening day loss to Green Bay in 2011 that cost the Saints the #1 seed and forced us to play the 39ers on the road

No questions asked, the loss to SF in 2011 in the playoffs. Gregg Williams effectively blitzed us out of the playoffs. We win that game and the Giants have to play us in the dome and the rest is history. IMO that year was another ring. Still burns.

That 2007 loss to Indy in the season opener REALLY hurt. Because the season before we had come 1 game away from the Super Bowl, and would have played Indy, I came into that game so completely optimistic, and man we just laid a humongous egg. It was the only time in the Payton/Brees era where I felt like the team was regressing into the "same old Saints" type of loser mentality, that this was going to be like all the other years and coaching regimes before them. The WWL broadcast after that game, with people calling in, was brutal to listen to.

The Atlanta loss in 2010 was the worst as far as psychological trauma exiting the Dome. I got home and had to go sit in a darkened room in silence for a while that afternoon.

She asked about regular season losses, not playoff. But thats a pretty bad one.

The last time we played the rams..... I believe Brees streak was almost stopped but he got a garbage TD, also we tattooed the colts the week previous, and I distinctly remember them not having a win yet as well

Showing my age here, but... During the Ditka era, Saints had a 10 point lead on the Bears in Chicago with something like 2 minutes left and ended up losing 14 - 10. I was listening at work and remember kicking something when that game ended, and then being very grateful I had on steel toe shoes.

...we also fumbled our way out of the playoffs. cant put total blame on the D when we had 5 turnovers.

This question specifically about Payton era though.

There was a game in I think 2008 where we were beating the Bucs at their place, had the game in hand. Needed 2 yards or something to get a first down, went for it on fourth I believe and gave the ball to Henderson on an end-around. He got stuffed. If I am not mistaken we would've had a pretty good chance for a playoff spot if we had won that game.

I can because we had that game won even with the 5 TO's. That last drive by SF was won because Williams blitzed the whole drive. A little prevent would have worked wonders.

No regular season game can equal what I felt in the Seattle and SF playoff losses. To this day I still don't really like talking about the SF game. Only another championship can heal that wound.

all of last season...I think anyone who owns a Sain't jersey should be subsidized by the NFL for that debacle.

It did; it prevented the Saints from winning!

I think early on Payton had the tendency to out coach himself. I think he's gotten better about that.

And as far as his era... the loss to Cleveland in the year following the Superbowl just hurt.

No sir it didnt. Allow me to refresh your memory, we were up 32-29 and SF got the ball with a little over a min left and 80 yards to score. What happened on that drive was unacceptable. Blitz after blitz and we get burned.

36-32 we lose. A turnover didn't cost us the game. The D coordinator did.

Every loss we ever had since we have been in the league, more so the years before 2006, one disappointment after the other year after year. When we lose now it's just not as bad as that because we have hope. I've always wondered if Manning would have had any type of O-line in his prime how good could we have been or how far we could have gone, glory days.

If that's the game I think Ditka managed the clock like a sun dial.

I must disagree. One series or even a couple of plays don't win/lose a game.
Our offense had 5 turnovers. That is unacceptable. In the history of the NFL I'd imagine 5 turnovers loses about 99% of the time. Our defense was the only thing that kept us from getting blown out by 4 scores.

Blaming that loss on the defense is absurd.

It wasn't the defenses fault it was greg williams going full boar blitz for the big play for the whole drive when a prevent would have easily shown up Smith's qb
Deficiences. The players did their part, were stuffing GOre and we still were ahead.

Only time I felt Jimmy Graham scored too early

Worse part is we had crushed the NY Giants a few weeks earlier and we would have rolled

Thomas knocked out having a concussion that wasn't flagged really hurt us

I hope we get the whiners in the playoffs ncc in the dome

By going to a PREVENT defense!!!

Seattle playoffs 2010

No running backs

Reggie can't get a half yard

That 12 miss tackled run that put us out of it

This beating by Seatle two weeks ago could linger but I actually feel it will make us stronger and the future victories oh so sweet

How about losing two second round draft picks because of an overblown story. It still stings and I can't wait till the day Goodell leaves.

Pats, Jets, Hawks, 2013 is all that is relevant to me. Especially, the Hawks game -- what if we would have won that -- we'd be goin' to the Big Dance fo sho.

As far as 2013 goes, it was the Pats game for me. The blatant hold on Galette to end the game was just infuriating. We won that damn game and the zebras gave it to New England.

I have to go with two. The loss to Seattle two weeks ago and the loss to Dallas in '09.

In the Dallas game I thought it was going to cost HFA, luckily Minn choked away an easy game and we took it.

This years Seattle game could and probably will cost us HFA. I didn't really expect to win that one but I didn't expect to roll over and play dead either.

I hear ya, Boutte, frustrating that we looked like a completely different team from the rest of the season. At least against the Jets, we looked like a pro-football team. And, now, the Hawks are in our heads for sure.

But, hey, any given Sunday, how bout those Bolts, huh? That was awesome. Normally, I can't stand Rivers, but I like just about anyone more than Peyton Manning. uck.

That was unfortunate, but it just meant it wasnt our year. However, it was St.Louis that cost us a bye.

Dallas loss doesnt bother me anymore we have gotten back at them and won the sb that season.

The Atlanta loss, yeah that one hurt. But think hard about that because Ryan underthrew a int against us that gave us the win. We both lost those games.

oh god i have to pick one?

never forget the rams back in what 1980 (?) beat us on a last second field to knock us out of the playoff chase. first time knocking on the door step to the promise land.

or was it because we ended up in jail after a rams fan took a swing at friend while leaving game?

either way that one sticks out in my head the most :)

Re: New Orleans Saints fans dish on the losses that lingers

Having not been a fan as long as most of you its the loss to the Rams 2 years ago.
The game should have been a gimme and would have given us the two seed in the NFC.No game @49ers.The 49ers assuming they beat the Lions come to the Dome and noway do I see them winning that.Green Bay got beat by the Giants so its the Giants @ Saints for the NFC and we had blown them out a few weeks before and would have again.
Saints-Pats Superbowl and they Pats defence was awful and the Saints offence was unbelievable that year with Brees Sproles clicking so well. The line was immense Bushrod-Nicks-DLP-Evans-Strief giving Brees huge time to pick out Moore, Colston and Graham.

Would and should have been a second Superbowl in three years.
