What now at corner?

With Greer officially gone, what will be our solution at corner? Corey White or P-Rob starting? Or do we draft one since this draft is so deep at corner?

Do you guys think we'll make a run at any FA corners or just stick with what we got? I would like to see us go after Verner or take Captain Munnerlyn from Carolina. Interested to hear what you guys think.

Re: What now at corner?

I think our #1 pick just got a lot more predictable.

Re: What now at corner?

Would love to see us get Verner, but I think it's more likely we draft a corner in the second round. I liked Robinson before the injury, if he can come back from that knee injury he could be a great number 2.
I'm really hoping we can get Pryor in the first as well, that dude next to Vaccaro would be an absolutely devastating secondary.

I"m thinking FA corner for a proven starter.

Re: What now at corner?

Verner or Grimes and draft a cb to develop. You can never have enough corners.

ChrisXVI 02-12-2014 08:04 PM

Re: What now at corner?

There's no chance in hell that we sign any of the top free agent corners. There just isn't enough money. We're looking at the draft and the development of Sweeting to take care of that position.

B_Dub_Saint 02-12-2014 08:08 PM

Re: What now at corner?

No way we take another rookie a corner. Its just to risky. I think we get a proven Vet for a good price.

What we really need is another Lewis type. Not to overhyped and wants to prove themselves. This organization needs another hungry play, not a diva.

cobbraking 02-12-2014 08:17 PM

Re: What now at corner?

I think we will draft a CB I hope we can get Justin Gilbert tall and great ball skills he can play KR and PR. I cant see us getting a CB in FA they want to much money but if we can get one at the right cost I don't mind.

cobbraking 02-12-2014 08:21 PM

Re: What now at corner?

I rather take a risk on drafting a CB then to let Corey White back in there.

amazin15 02-12-2014 08:25 PM

Re: What now at corner?

I could see us drafting one and singing a vet to a one year deal. Let the vet start the season until the rookie gets his feet wet. Then let the rookie take over similar to what we did with Armstead.

ChrisXVI 02-12-2014 08:28 PM

Re: What now at corner?

We'll sign a CB or 2 in free agency, but not any of the top guys like Verner, Grimes or Munnerlyn. Especially considering we need to replace or resign 2 O-Linemen and a free safety.

Re: What now at corner?

As long as we can maintain our pass rush, we can make do with any whichever way we decide to go. If it's via free agency, I don't feel as if we need to spend lavishly. If it's via draft, I don't feel as if we have to spend our first round pick on a corner. Who knows... the answer may already be on our roster. It's certainly an area of concern, but not as big as what it's perceived to be in my opinion.

Re: What now at corner?

We don't want anything to do with Captain Munnerlyn. He sucks.

I am very comfortable with Lewis/Robinson/White and a top rookie. Maybe even see about bringing back Tracy Porter who had a bounceback year in Oakland playing the nickel. Or somebody like Cassius Vaughn who has starting experience and good ball skills.

Re: What now at corner?

CB EJ Gaines in the third round.

I guess I'll put the rest of the draft class on here...
1st Round S Clinton-Dix
2nd Round DE Stephon Tuitt
4th Round ILB Shayne Skov
5th Round OT Seantrel Henderson
6th Round OLB/DE Larry Webster

Re: What now at corner?

Patrick Robinson will get his chance to start, he was the starter before he was injured in the preseason...

White will compete with him for that spot and they draft one in the mid rounds for depth

Given the CB depth in this draft we don't need to go out and spend the first round pick on one, plus it's going to be a buyer's market again for vets. That being said, we can get some depth in FA for a good price and the mid rounds of the draft, plus we still have Robinson and White.

Hated seeing Greer go. I know he's a toss up on if he can play at the same level but I really hope he finds his way back. He was always solid.

I'm not sure how much stock you put into ProFootballFocus, but according to them Munnerlyn was actually very good this season.

I do remember Carolina fans hating on him when he was their #2 CB a couple years ago, but I think they moved him down to slot CB, and it seems like he's thriving at that position. I think Munnerlyn would be a great addition, personally. Lewis and White as #1 and #2 CBs with Munnerlyn in the slot? Hell yeah.

Maybe "sucks" is a strong word, but he's basically only good at nickel. We don't need a #3 corner. We might need a #2, depending on whether or not you think one of White or Robinson is up to the task.

Re: What now at corner?

I would like to see P-Rob play a year for Ryan before discarding him given he is healthy. He has all the talent in the world, he just needs to put everything together. White is an intriguing player too.

Re: What now at corner?

I would like to see Walt Aikens taken in the 5th round. He is in the mold of the modern day corner…….6'1" 205 lbs., 4.4-4.5 40 and aggressive at the point of attack. He is very athletic and can play jump ball with the best WRs as he was a point guard at Illinois before transferring to FCS (Liberty University).

Settle down lol. lawd!

We fared very well for the last 7 games of the season with out him and didnt see any drop off in our pass defense.

Greer graded out worst than Lofton on pass coverage for 2013, and his coverage rating is lower than Corey Whites..

I do not get the fondness.

How so, it was our number one need..... Many in here predicted defense as the first round pick.... OLB or secondary help.

Neither do I, it's astounding.... There wasn't a drop off in play.....Jabari was getting picked on since before last season...... He was moved because Keenan is better, hasn't played in a full season in the last two or three seasons.... It's time.

It seems like people only remember White's first game after Greer got hurt. After that he seemed to figure things out and was actually really good.

I think people's perceptions are also skewed by him being a fifth-round draft pick from a small school, so they assume he can't be any good. Same for Strief, who by all accounts is one of the top right tackles in football, but to hear some people talk he is straight trash. If any team's fans should know better it's Saints fans, considering how much the team is built around low picks and undrafted guys.

Its not that simple. CB's have a lot to grasp.

I like the idea of a vet coming and being our #1 or 2 CB and a rookie coming in in nickel situations and rotating in giving them time to develop.

So CBs have more to grasp than Safety's? (Vaccaro)

Re: What now at corner?

Porter came in 08 and looked great as a rookie. All three teams in our division had rookies started at CB this year that did a good job. I wouldn't assume that just because a guy is a rookie that he can't get the job done.

I personally think White can stay at #2 and be great, but that's just me. But I'm also not opposed to moving him back to nickel. He's proven to be a good player at both positions. But whatever position we stick White at, imo we'll need to address the other one in either FA or the draft. I'm willing to give PRob a chance, but I'm honestly not expecting much. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

I would love it if we drafted Jason Verrett out of TCU. That guy has cover skills you can't teach. He'd make an immediate impact imo.

+1. You aren't alone on JVerrett. He is a bit undersized for me but very crafty and has good closing speed. What is more impressive to me is that he is a sound, fundamental tackler.

porter, greer, did p. rob ever prove himself yet. the injuries or the money (got paid) and the hunger goes away. injury has the most impact on declining play I believe.

There are some interesting prospects in the draft. The question is who is better man on man in coverage? We need someone who is capable of big plays.
