Saints sign K Shayne Graham and T Harris

After making their first big moves of the offseason on Wednesday, the Saints have re-signed three players — including veteran kicker Shayne Graham.

Graham, a 13-year veteran who signed with the Saints on Dec. 18 after kicker Garrett Hartley was released, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 11.

Harris played in all 16 regular-season games with one start at right tackle against the New England Patriots. He played extensively on special teams and also lined up as an extra tight end for blocking purposes.

Odds that Bryce Harris is our starting RT next season? Pretty damn good. I just don't see how we would resign him before Strief if we didn't have plans for him.

I could see it being a little about leverage too. Now we have a RT on the rooster which makes Strief not being a "must have" anymore. Also a factor is that he is dirt cheap.

Harris At 6'6" and 320lbs, an exclusive free agent, who knows the offense...I would say a insurance policy should Strief sign elsewhere. I read the Browns might be a possible landing spot for Strief. Or, Kromer and Bears putting together Saints v.2.

Im guessing the front office expect to loose Strief and will let Harris battle with a mide round high upside draft pick for the starting spot the same as last year.I wouldnt be surprised to see another vet on minimum brought in like Jason Smith last year

Two years ago Strief mentioned on WWL that Folks should keep an eye on Harris, he's got talent and can play in this league.

The Saints may have a challenger on the PS. Marcel Jones, 6'7" 320lbs from Nebraska.

harris signed with falcannots in 12 a ufda had a great camp was on pt squad when Saints signed him in 2012 to 63 roster came in looked good but in his fist start had a freak injury, was on ir rest of year .had great 13 camp with saints an played very good at RT.If saints do not resign Stief like someone else posted look for harris to start at right tackle an see if he can hold off the RT i look for the saints to draft.

Graham and Harris will both make the team. Harris will start if Zach doesn't play ball on salary.

I'm ok with Shayne Graham, so much other restructuring to focus on.

Harris starting RT? oh boy

if i remember the pats game well enough i was praying for stinch's return the next week. I will need to rewatch that game

The idea does not give me the warm fuzzies right now. BIG GAMBLE to plug him in as a starter

We will have a good idea after the draft i guess

For most of the season harris was active on the game day 46 an not Armstead so for most of the year he was the back option at tackle. There were one or two games when Brown was out for some of the snaps as he Brown was hurt in the games.what the Saints did was move Stieff to left tackle an Harris played right tackle.i thought Harris did a good job good enough to light a fire under Stiefs backside which made Stief a better player. :bng::clown:

Striefs knees are shot. I don't think we will count on him again.

Where did you hear his knees were shot?

I wouldn't pencil him in as a starter just yet. Like Hagan, I would not feel too comfortable with Harris and Armstead as our bookends.
We need some stability, so why not sign him? We need backups too

From a financial viewpoint, the average salary for a RT with Strief experience is about $6 million per year. Harris just signed for $570k. I am not sure the Saints can afford Strief at that price given the current cap concerns.

Fans had the same stability concerns when the Saints let Faine, Goodwin, Nicks, and Bushrod all walk in FA. Not to mention when Stinchcomb retired and Strief got the RT position.

Although not wholesale, and stating the obvious, we are witnessing a youth movement with the Saints. Out with the expensive old and in with the cheap young (sans Brees). I point to the DL as a possible example (sans Bunkley).

If I were PT, Moore, and Bunkley I would be looking over my shoulder at every turn at K. Robinson, Stills, and J. Jenkins.

M. Jenkins is a FA which is why I did not include him in the above group of veterans.

i agree with your take on things and here it comes BUT i think this is a draft that can change the complexion of the team as well as make some players excellent trade bait to help with the cap.

the saints are set up to add in a RT right now via the draft. contracts line up well for that move.

aaaannnnddd.... We are down to 1.4m in cap space, not enough to start the season.

Huge cuts are coming.

We also signed Trevin Wade

The dropoff from Strief to Harris is LARGE. If Strief gets more money elsewhere, God bless him. But, I don't want to see Harris starting at RT.

In a couple of articles I read last year. After watching Strief hobble around after that I started noticing we don't run to the right often. Not only that his lateral movement is unimpressive and he was getting beat all last season.jmho

Strief has NEVER had knee problems
Saints ran over right tackle 19% averaging 4.15 yards per attempt.
Strief ranked 7th among 76 tackles in pass blocking efficiency
Gave up only three sacks in 651 pass attempts in 2013
According to Pro Football Focus, the highest ranked player on the Saints
Including Drew

history wise you need to be aware of the knees. he does have a history of being banged up off and on which is expected over the years but the age factor is looming larger.

I would like to see the saints draft early with the idea that by mid season we have a solid replacement ready to go. not saying he starts but is ready. then have streif finish out his time as a saint as the back up to both OT. that's if we can sign him.

Harris is till a project that maybe able to step into the role of back up when streif retires. i just have not seen starter ability in him YET

Re: Saints sign K Shayne Graham and T Harris

Every OL is going to have knee issues at some point. Especially the taller ones. Jagcatdad is absolutely correct in pointing out Strief's high level of play. He is one of the best right tackles in football. It is lunacy to think we should not be re-signing him this offseason.

Re: Saints sign K Shayne Graham and T Harris

I didn't think it was a question of whether the Saints would WANT Strief back. I think the question will be can they afford him. He's likely to get some good offers from other teams.
