Yea I feel the same. IF he gets WR designation and wants Megatron money I say we try and work out a deal with another team to sign and trade him if that can be done.

We would have to eat the guaranteed money in any deal though wouldn't we?

A sign and trade won't work because as you said, the bonus money would stay with us, and I expect it will be in the 20 million range.

All guaranteed money stays with the home team. Signing bonus and Franchise Tag monies are guaranteed.

I'm down with whatever decision works best for the saints. I don't want to pay out the arse for him but I don't want him to walk for nothing. If the differences in money between letting him go elsewhere and keeping him are negligible I say keep him.

there are ways around this issue. not sure what the new collective bargaining agreement is like but you use to be able to have the other team just sign that will take the entire new contract as part of the deal. i can not imagine that has changed.

If you cut a player all the money sticks with the original team. if the player signs for less your on the hook for the balance. ie Mecheam via the chargers.

No sir, on all accounts.

Guaranteed money/Signing bonus is not split between terms, can't be bartered away, there are no deals, never was. The source is quoted here in these forums no less than a dozen times.

Signing bonus and guaranteed money are owned and paid by the home team, no way around it, can't be traded or agreed to away.

No way around the dead money hit.

There was no split of Meachems contract, the Chargers released him and had to eat $6.85m of dead money, once released that contract was history. Saints deal was a new deal and had nothing to do with the cancelled Chargers contract.

Trade - split difference in contract value EXCEPT guaranteed and signing bonus they are dead money.

Cut/Releases - contract over, no difference to pick up or split, home team eats dead money for guaranteed/signing bonus (Meachem).

The only way around that (and its not really going around it) is for the other team to compensate for the home teams dead money hit by offering a draft pick(s).

The new team doesn't have to pay the dead money, but gives up draft picks
The old team eats the dead money, but gets a pick or two to compensate.

The old team eats the dead money, but gets a pick or two to compensate.

Team of origin/old team/team that the contract was written with, in our case Saints can not shed or trade away dead money hit for signing bonus, guaranteed money.

Yes, the new team can try and off set the lost cap space value with picks but nothing makes that dead money go away except the end of that season.

Point being that Hagen said something could be done about the dead money hit, and that isn't correct.

Teams can give or trade just about anything..... But the dead money for signing bonuses and guaranteed portions of contracts.
