Sproles was never a "speed back", he is elusive but not fast. He has become a lit less elusive the last year and ended up the victim of a lot of one arm tackles.

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

After these cuts I think we are close to long-term deal with Jimmy. No grievance by his side. Just don't overpay the man. I'll hate some moves/cuts if everything goes to Jimmy.

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

I don't think we're going to be able to find a trade partner. Teams are trying to shed cap space to get under the cap and go for the big dogs in free agency first. No point in trading for him and lose a draft pick when you know you can get him for less on the open market.

You realize Jimmy Graham isn't the reason why we're making cuts right?

Probably not.

We haven't even started to restructure contracts yet and we're under the cap. If we wanted to keep Moore and Sproles, we could have worked something out to retain them. The fact of the matter is that Moore isn't worth 4+ million dollars any more and even though he was a fan favorite, it's a business. His production can be found at a cheaper rate elsewhere. As far as Sproles is concerned, since it appears we're going to focus more on a power running game with Ingram and Khiry, there's was going to be an odd man out between Thomas and Sproles... maybe even both.

I have a feeling we're going to make a big move in free agency.

We started it last year on defense, and now this year on offense.

Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

Man... Sad Friday night. I completely understand the moves, but losing Moore and Sproles makes my Friday beers a little less festive. We better not lose both Strief and DLP because this is a lot of change. Back to the topic though, perhaps a Dexter McCluster signing is in the cards to replace Sproles.

So much for that rumor that we were restructuring his contract.

Looks like Loomis took my advice and is finally doing his job. Bout time.

Now cut PT, Bunkley and Hawthorne and I can call it a night.

I'm glad you're not the Saints GM

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

Sad, but I agree with everything Loomis is doing. Also, quite frankly, if someone were to give us 2 1st rounders for Graham I'd be happy with that too. Retooling the offense seems like the best route. I just didn't like how our offense looked last year, it felt flat. Nobody ever seemed open We need WRs. We need linemen.

I'm not so sure about Strief or DLP either ...

We are losing some key players however sometimes change is good.

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

These are not cuts, this is a team over haul. Man this is surprising but interesting as well. This team will look completely different next year especially on offense. The offensive scheme will look different I think. More ground and pound and less screen game.

I guarantee 2 of the 3 of PT, Bunkley, and Hawthorne will be cut.

Time to trim the fat and get some young fast athletic players to compete with the Mighty NFC West.

Bunkley just turned 30, and Hawthorne is 28.

Hardly ancient sport.

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

With needs at Corner, Safety, and more help along both lines and receiver, all of these moves make sense. I agree with Mr. Magic, Piere and Bunk could be next. Hawthorne played well last year, so I don't think they are going to move him.

I think we are in a lot better position this off-season as we know what we have along that defensive front. Cam and Gallete had strong seasons, and Hicks and Jenkins will hopfully continue to play well next season. The backers need to be upgraded as time goes on. We can survive with Lofton, Hawthorn and I would think we will try to bring Haralson back. Butler will finaly take the field this season. Our back end needs more work.

Once again, we need to hit home runs with out draft picks and quality buys in free agency.

You said ancient and washed up.

Bunkley's dead money is 4.83 million, so if you cut him we only save about 1.2 million. You won't find a better DT for 1.2 million.

He should restructure, but I'd be disappointed if we cut him.

Hawthorne may have been our best LB last year. Hawthorne has 3.5 million cap, but 4.5 in dead money. If we cut him it actually adds a million to our cap.

PT is probably the best candidate because he has a 2.9 cap hit and zero dead money.

So, by cutting all 3 of these players you save a grand total of 3.1 million, of which PT accounts for 2.9

ChrisXVI 03-07-2014 08:03 PM

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

I just shake my head at people saying that Bunkley should be cut. It's obvious that we need to restructure his contract but cutting him would be insane. With all of our needs do we really want to have only one DT on our roster?!

I think Sproles being cut means PT is staying (possible restructured). He is hands down the most well rounded back we have had in a long time. Not to mention the most dependable. I hope he stays (for a hometown discount). PT, Ingram, and Robinson makes for a nice backfield IMO.

Re: Could Sproles contract be next in line to be terminated?

I've been pretty frustrated with too many RB screens . It was getting hilariously predictable. Teams have been seeing it coming for at least a 2 seasons now. Time to get the traditional run game back. 2009 anyone?
