New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd
 

The New Orleans Saints made a huge, unexpected splash in free agency as the team agreed to terms with prized safety Jairus Byrd on a six-year contract, the team announced Tuesday night. The deal is worth a maximum of $54 million, including $28 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.

The Byrd deal came on the heels of former Saints starting safety Malcolm Jenkins agreeing to a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. Jenkins said the Saints never made him an offer forcing him to look for a contract elsewhere, and it looks like the Saints had loftier plans of landing one of the top overall free agents on the market.

The Saints weren't in a position to spent megabucks on a free agent as they're about $2 million under the salary cap before the Byrd deal. So the Saints will have to make significant salary maneuvering to make this deal work as Byrd secured the $9 million per season price tag he sought in free agency.

Wow! That was fast. A friend at work who is a Bills fan told me that Byrd is awesome, but just can't stay on the field. Very fast and very good instincts and hands. Had Plantar Fascia? Last year same as Jimmy. Might be about to get past the injury bug. I like the move by the Saints. We got the better FS and Philly got our throw away.

Mike Detillier said this evening on the radio, that if we were going to somehow get Byrd, we wouldn't be able to let him leave NOLA w/o a deal. Boy was he right!! I want a Loomis Jersey!!

This is awesome! It's great to have a talented safety tandem like this. I think our coverage will be bolstered significantly and allow Rob R and our D to play tighter coverages at times and attack offenses! Love it!

It's great to have such an incredible owner and front office/coaching staff. Having grown up in the 70's, and now having the opportunity to see this team do the things they have done, on and off the field...It's awesome!
