Father - Gill Byrd played in the NFL from 1983-1992 and is currently he Cornerbacks coach for Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Roto Comment -
The deal includes $28 million guaranteed, which is $6 million more than Dashon Goldson got last offseason. Byrd got his wish, after all. Just like that, the Saints have one of the league's best safety duos, with Byrd joining ascendant second-year pro Kenny Vaccaro. One of the league's elite center fielders, Byrd is going to have ample opportunity to make plays behind DC Rob Ryan's blitzing, aggressive 3-4 front. He has 22 career picks and 11 forced fumbles across 73 games. Byrd's foot issues from 2013 are a minor concern, but he appeared in all 16 games from 2010-12. He is still only 27.

2013 (Apparently he played with foot issues... only played in 11 games which were in the last part of the season) good lord when he is healthy
PFF Break Down

Ranked 8th Overall of all S in the NFL - by comparison Vaccaro was 27th, Bush was 25th

Coverage - 7th Bush 17th, Vaccaro 25th
Run -18th Vaccaro 3rd
Catch% in his coverage - 50% 5th in league
Yards gained in his coverage - 83 yards , ranked 4th
Yards After Catch - 51 ranked 8th
Longest pass in his coverage - 13 yards, ranked #1
TDs allowed 1 Tied at 12th second least in the league.
Interceptions - 4, 4th in the league
QB rating against him - 35.0, 2nd in the league

2012/2011 Basically the second best Safety in the NFL with #1 changing.

He is consistently a top 2-4 Safety in this league.

Against the Saints in 2013 he allowed Sproles 1 catch for 7 yards, Graham 1 catch for 9, defended 1 pass to Colston.

We now have one of the best secondaries in the NFL. Concentrate on a OLB/DE like anythony Barr from Ucla in the draft. He might not make it to us but a dual threat would be outstanding

Loomis is a genius! falcons fans are like "yeah they only have 2m cap space and still need to sign jimmy graham" BOOM arguably best free safety in the league signs with us!

Our secondary is going to be sick!!

Apparently all of Falcon's Life thinks we are in violation of the salary cap and cheating the system...

They're just mad because they wanted him and Loomis is a genius :bng:

I am going to make a SWAG attempt to look at what his contract will look like.

6 years - 54m / 11m signing bonus / 28m guaranteed
2014 1.83m SB / 3m - Cap Hit 4.83m
2015 1.83m SB / 4m - Cap Hit 5.83m
2016 1.83m SB / 4m - Cap Hit 5.83m
2017 1.83m SB / 6m - Cap Hit 7.83m
2018 1.83m SB / 12m - Cap Hit 13.83m
2019 1.83m SB / 14m - Cap Hit 15.83m

At the end of 2017 he has been paid all of his 28m Guaranteed
In 2018 he is cut and we will have a dead money of 3.66m

This is just a basic view and does not cover the bonuses for roster, work out etc...

That is because Loomis needs to make some more moves before Byrd actually inks.

I think they are just waiting/hoping for a fish to bite onto the Sproles bait

The signing of Byrd proves that The Saints are considered an elite team. We were able to get a valuable piece that was needed on the first day. And its apparent that he viewed us as his landind spot as well.

Sproles departing on any terms will = 750k in dead money regardless.

Before Byrds contract we had 2m in cap space, even if Sproles is cut, that is 3.4m in cap space totaling 5.4m, by my contract distribution, and I would in no way trust mine LOL, but we would still be 500k under.

Then there is the rumored PT release +3m in cap pspace
3.5m in room
Restructuring Grubs/Evans 8mish
11.5m in cap space

Oak, is there a chance Brees would restructure to make some space?

I think the plan is too wait till next year to restructure Drews deal. His cap is still around not over $20ml yet, the jumps starts next year when I can see a extension to drop his cap

I personally do not see it. His Salary is 10.7m and his bonus prorat number for this season is 7.4m .. Basically 3mish to work with.

A restructure is essentially converting Sal to Bonus through extension.

Next season is a 10m difference between those two and you could cut his cap number by 5-6m easily with a restructure/extension.

Didn't realize they would take the signing bonus over 5 instead of 6 years. I wasn't too far off, that Misc 6.1m in 2015 is curiously odd.

Not bad at all
Effectively a 6 year deal with options to cut after 3

looks like we are planning on keeping him for 4 years. 6th year he will be at the rip old age of 33. so 31 and kicked to curb sounds about right. :)

god only knows what the cap will look like by year 6. but most of the cap heavy senior citizens will be done with their contracts by 4 years any ways.
so who knows that maybe the going rate for a player that has 4 consecutive pro bowl years as saints safety under their belt

Structure wise given the the teams cap situation for the next three years that contract is set up nicely.

You might like the looks of this contract but this is the kind of guy who will pull a no-show and demand more $$. Hopefully it's all different now but I doubt it.

I don't agree. Byrd certainly wanted his payday (and rightfully so), but he also wanted out of Buffalo because he was sick of being on losing teams. That's why he joined the Saints.. He wanted to win. I don't think somebody who is actively looking to join a winning organization would just quit because he's now been paid.
