Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

Thank you Jimmy Graham!

Tony Gonzalez started it. Jimmy Graham made it popular. Roger Goodell may end it.

A source tells Profootballtalk.com that the league is considering banning “the practice of dunking the ball over the crossbar” — a.k.a. the goal post dunk.

The topic is expected to be discussed during next week’s NFL owners meetings in Orlando.

While the NFL has clamped down on touchdown celebrations, abolishing props being used during the act, the goal post dunk and Lambeau Leap were two exceptions. As PFT points out, however, Graham likely raised a few eyebrows last season, when one of his dunks knocked the crossbar off kilter, resulting in a stoppage of play.

Thanks to that single malfunction, we may never again see the practice of dunking the ball over the crossbar.

Hey, they don’t call it the “No Fun League” for nothing.

Since when does the NFL care about a "stoppage of play"...

If they bend the post, 15 yard penalty and a fine.

Problem solved.

It's ok for your team mate to slap you on the ass but you can't dunk a ball. wow

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

"Player Safety" no doubt. If that's true why doesn't the NFL change the uniforms to those big "Sumo Wrestler" suits? You can't get close to head in those. All RB's and Receivers would run at the same speed the game would be safe and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

lmao this is turning into such a proper pansies league. At this rate the team should be announced at the debutante ball.

They should ban the Gus frerotte wall headbutt. Very dangerous.

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

This isn't a player safety issue; it is a delay of game issue. The delay was only caused because of JG screwing up the goal post at Atlanta because he hung on. They want to fix it? Simply ban hanging on the goal post and its done.

As much as it entertained me to see Graham do that to Atlanta I can admit it delayed the game and I can admit that if Gonzalez or any other team did that to one of ours I would be upset at the delay. And if they want to ban goal post dunk then they need to get rid of the leap as well.

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

Looking at it objectively, yes, a slam dunk after a TD would qualify as excessive celebration. However, the timing of this discussion puts Goodell in the N.O cross-hairs again.
At what point does it stop? Sherman got a $9000 fine for making the choking sign, but not for humiliating Crabtree. How hard is it to define bad sportsmanship vs. pure exuberation?

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

I am probably in the minority, but I see it as a good thing. Just a matter of time before someone pops an ACL doing that. While they at it, should ban the Lambeau leap too for the same reason.

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

Every player should start doing the leap into the stands... then they can ban that too.

Or just make the goal posts stronger so they don't move when someone touches it.

Crazy idea, yeah I know.

What's next? A fine and 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty for "excessive smiling" after a TD?

A penalty or fine for blinking too much during a game?

Re: Report: NFL considering banning goal post dunk

The NFL is rightfully protecting their product and investment. Dealing with bent goal posts on a nationally televised game and or the possibility of a broken ankle or wrist outside of game play/practice are not risks I would take either.

If jimmy wanted to dunk there was always plenty of opportunity to do that in the NBA.

Go to the LSU "H" Style goal post and wahlah, problem solved. No more tilting the GP one way or the other.

I agree with banning the Lambo and whatever else Leap also. Not only is there danger to the Player, there is danger to the fans.

Well then they should ban the Lambeaux leap as well since we are ruining the fun aspects of watching a touchdown as we know it!

I've thought for a while that Atlanta intentionally loosened their goal posts. Out of all teams, it happens at our most hated rival?

I'm glad it happened to the falcons.

Kind of a, "not only are we gonna kick your *** but we're going to mess up your stadium too. Try to stop us if you can."

They couldn't so they told on us.

The best solution? Jimmy run-blocks and we ground-and-pound a lot more of our TD's than last year!

No ones ever spiked a ball so hard that a crew needed to spend 10minutes repairing goal posts.

I just read that Rich McCay, head of the NFL competition committee, was responsible for fast-tracking the rule change.

Rich is also President and CEO of the Atlanta Falcons.

I think we should just ban TD.
If the players took to the field but all had a big Madden game instead it would be better for player safety too
