Trading down could be option for New Orleans Saints at No. 27

The New Orleans Saints can go in a number of directions with their first pick in the NFL draft. As usual, I expect them to stick to the "best player available" practice that has worked so well for them over the years. That said, I don't think they'll take Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles in the unlikely event either QB drops to No. 27.

By all accounts, this is one of the deepest drafts in recent years. The first three rounds are loaded with starting-caliber talent. The depth of the positional prospects must be considered when analyzing the potential strategy of teams.

The Saints have a couple of glaring holes at cornerback and center that will need to be addressed at some point, either in the remaining free agency period or the draft. They could also use a wide receiver. But the receiver position is loaded with as many as 15 players carrying high grades, so I expect New Orleans to go in another direction than receiver in Round 1, gambling it can find a quality wideout in the later rounds.

Could be. Love the excerpt on draft philosophy- players who score and prevent TDs in early rounds.

Odell?

I like the idea. Sort of unconventional...but sounds like a Loomis/Payton move. Having 8 picks in the first five rounds would certainly increase the odds of us hitting on something...

When was trading down ever prevented? Was it prevented at some point? I think it's always been an option.

It's prevented when you can't find a trade partner... Haha

What is a 27th 1st round worth and what pick in the 2nd would be good to pick at? There are always players that fall and rise on draft day.

We gave a 2nd round pick and a 1st round pick for the 28th pick to get Ingram....

Teams wanting Derek Carr...

Your trade candidates will be the Raiders and Cleveland...

Either team could take one of the top LT or LB Khalil Mack, then move up from the second to late in the first to secure Derek Carr...

Saints could send their 1R (27) pick and ask for Cleveland 2R (35) and 3R (83) putting it at Saints send 680 trade value vs Cleveland 725 value...

Trickier, Saints could send their 1R (27) pick and ask for Oakland 2R (36) and 3R (67) putting it at Saints send 680 trade value vs Oakliand 795 value...

really big insight. the more this draft unfolds the more i see every team will be open to trading back. good news for us is it is almost a sure fire thing the panthers will go WR. after that all the teams could go in any direction. so as long as thr kitties are so void at WR we have an outside shot.

Denver is the only team that might take a QB so that is seeming less and less as a factor in my book.

Question is would you pass on Brandin Cooks or Odell Beckham for the picks? you would also loss out on any player that may fall to us. CJ Ford or NIX for example?

I don't think Cleveland would be an option because they have Indy's pick at 26 or something.

Yes, but they are so devoid of top tier talent right now...

They have a core of CB Joe Haden, LT Joe Thomas, C Alex Mack, TE Jordan Cameron, WR Josh Gordon (Next Violation 1 Yr Suspension); they need to restock their defense and offensive line...

So I wouldn't count them out...

The value is in trading up. Everyone wants to trade down this year. Some teams are gonna get some great trade-up deals.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if we traded up instead of down.

Mike Pettine is a defensive-minded coach but like all defensive minded coaches he knows one thing the importance of a solid OL. Especially if you thinking of putting a rookie QB back there. i still think ROT is in the books at one (Greg Robinson, Auburn) and then go with a glamor pick with the second first rounder. Then again he could just grab the best OG and say the OL is done say Xavier Su'a-Filo UCLA. that would be a scary OL. now put that rookie back there. A.J. McCarron might be a solid pick for them

I see the Browns having little to do with us in the draft unless we trade up some where a long the lines or they trade up into a round later in the draft.

Why haven't we ever covered these options before is what baffles me. Are these options from the new CBA? :P

I'll be happier -mebbe- when I see what they do with it. I'm hoping to be just as unhappy as I was with last year's pick. I really wanted a DL.

Shhhhhh!

Roger, because he hates us so much, probably has an account here at B&G, because we know so much. If he remembers we have a 1st this year, he'll manufacture something and take it away!
