The Advocate continues the countdown to the 2014 NFL draft with the third of an eight-part series on the Saints’ top five selections -- round-by-round -- as chosen by Sheldon Mickles. The series will continue each week until the top five first-round selections are revealed on May 6 -- two days before the May 8-10 draft.

ROUND 6

1. Fred McAfee, RB (1991/154th overall)
In two stints with the Saints (1991-93, 2000-06), McAfee made his mark as a running back and special teams star. In 122 games, he rushed for 897 yards with five TDs on 209 carries. He led the team in rushing as a rookie with 494 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He made his biggest contributions as one of the NFL’s top special teams players, being known as a fearless tackler. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2002 during his second stint with the Saints.

2. Johnnie Poe, CB (1981/144th overall)
A member of Bum Phillips’ 1981 famed draft class that produced 10 starters, Poe played seven seasons and started 90 of 100 games he appeared in with the Saints. While he wasn’t the greatest cover corner, he had 17 career interceptions. He came up with a career-high seven picks in 1983, when he was named a UPI All-NFC pick, and ranked second in the league with 146 return yards. He also had four interceptions in 1986 and finished his career with six fumble recoveries.

3. Floyd Turner, WR (1989/159th overall) While he played in only 57 career games in five seasons with the Saints, Turner provided fans with blazing downfield speed. The former Northwestern State star caught 124 passes for 1,808 yards, averaging 14.6 yards, and had 14 TDs. His best season was in 1991 when he caught 64 passes for 927 yards and eight TDs -- leading the team in the last two categories -- as the Saints won their first division title. He had three 100-yard games that year, including nine catches for 179 yards with a 68-yard TD against Chicago.

4. Glen Redd, ILB (1981/166th overall)
Chosen 22 picks after Poe with another selection in the sixth round, Redd started all 16 games as a rookie. He eventually played six seasons and performed well before the arrival of Sam Mills and Vaughan Johnson in 1986 from the USFL made him expendable. Redd played in 68 games with 36 starts -- starting all 16 games in 1985 before Mills and Johnson came in -- and had two interceptions.

5. James Williams, ILB (1990/158th overall) Played mostly as a backup and on special teams in five seasons with the Saints. He played a total of 78 games with 20 starts and had three sacks, two interceptions and 206 total tackles in those five seasons. Williams went on to play four more seasons with two teams and had a nice nine-year NFL career for himself while playing in 137 games.

Loved me some Floyd Turner. Was never the same after he broke his leg. But that dude could fly.

All teams have, that's why drafting needs is not that popular and such a risky proposition. The majority of the mock drafts are done with need in mind.

You can go through all the teams drafts, at lease 1/2 of each years draft classes are full of "who the heck is that", and a good % of them dont get many starts.
