New Orleans submits preliminary bid to host Super Bowl 2018

New Orleans organizers submitted a preliminary bid to host the 2018 Super Bowl on Tuesday, and the NFL will decide within weeks if the Crescent City will host the game for a record 11th time.

Along with Indianapolis and Minneapolis, New Orleans is one of three finalists to host the event.

"It's an extremely competitive process," said Jay Cicero, the president/CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. "Minnesota has a new stadium, and Indianapolis has its own desire to get the game back. The competition to host the Super Bowl increases every year."

If successful, New Orleans officials plan to use Super Bowl LII to kick off a yearlong celebration of the city's tri-centennial birthday.

The initial bid covers the nuts-and-bolts specifications of hosting the big game: hotel room blocks, logistics, staffing, event space, etc.

Officials from the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, the New Orleans Saints, the Greater New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureas, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana collaborated on the bid, Cicero said.
