Brandon Deaderick works out for the Saints

With NFL rosters at 90, and full of the younger and cheaper, these are desperate times for NFL veterans looking for work.

So veteran defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick is out beating the bushes looking for work.

According to Adam Caplan of ESPN, Deaderick worked out for the Saints, after a previous stop with the Chiefs last week.

Deaderick spent last year with the Jaguars after being released by the Patriots in the preseason, but was placed on IR late in the year with an elbow injury.

Assuming he’s well, he’s good enough to be on someone’s roster, especially someone running a 3-4 looking for a two-down run-stopper.

I don't know a thing about this guy. He is a Saint though so I'm pulling for him. Sometimes the third team you are with is the right fit to tap all your potential. We do a good job of developing players........well, except for the LB'ers.

I was wondering if we were going to sign him because we made two roster spots available.

Good pickup, guy that can swing from end to tackle and play anywhere on the line. Good replacement for Tom Johnson.

Here was his scouting report when drafted. Since then though he has bounced around as a waiver wire pickup. And he also has a slight history with injuries.

Strengths

Played defensive end for Alabama’s 3-4 scheme. Hard to move once he establishes leverage. Solid awareness and good hand placement. Average initial punch and has sound gap responsibility. Plays with a good motor. Gets his hands up when the quarterback throws the ball. Locks out his arms on the blocker and reads the play well. Keeps blockers off the linebackers. Solid tackler when given the opportunity. Can collapse the pocket and has a nice bull rush when rushing the passer.

Weaknesses

Speed is only adequate. Upper body strength is only adequate. Struggles to get off blocks to make the play. Doesn’t always play with leverage. Will often stand straight up after the snap and play high. Not fast enough to be a one gap defensive tackle in the NFL. Needs to develop some variety in his pass rushing moves.

Analysis

Deaderick has a solid amount of experience in a complex, 3-4 scheme. Needs to develop his upper body strength and add some bulk to effectively play the 5 technique in the NFL, which may be his only possible position. His first step is not quick enough to be a one-gap penetration player. Deaderick is a hard worker that played in an NFL style scheme for a former NFL head coach. His skill set and experience will make him a nice addition to a 3-4 team in the middle rounds of the draft.

i saw him with the pats he is a solid rotational player that can clean up a pocket once in a while. he is not going to be the first guy in there but if the first two miss by all odds he will be collapsing the pocket making like hard for the QB to get a third movement in the pocket.

Run defense is were he adds some solid depth. Jordan getting a breather on a running down, having him and hicks lined up at DE would not worry me to much.

Depth wise against the run it is a solid move. against the pass he will aid our speed guys holding and slowly collapsing a pocket. he should get a couple of clean sacks along the way

think a poor man Hicks without the huge upside still come

Pats released him because they were deep at DE and needed to add depth at various other positions on defense. the radio shows had a bit of a bummer move by the pats but an understandable one due to team needs attitude.

He is not a camp body if he would not have been hurt going into 2010 draft would have been a high 3rd or low 5th rd pick he still was drafted 247th by Patriots.Good enough to stick every year on a active NFL 53 roster.
