New Orleans Saints quarterback Ryan Griffin poised to make serious push for backup job

The race between Ryan Griffin and Luke McCown for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind New Orleans Saints starter Drew Brees is heating up.

One week after Griffin took the majority of snaps with the second team during the portion of organized team activities that were open to the media, McCown and Griffin split the opportunities equally during the first day of the Saints' minicamp on Tuesday.

Griffin turned plenty of heads in front of the fans assembled for their first look at the 2014 version of the team including a stretch in which he had four consecutive touchdown throws during a red zone drill.

The Tulane product says things have a different feel to them now that he's had one year of experience under his belt.

"It's definitely a different feel," Griffin said. "Being through it for a year, especially this time last year not really knowing what to expect. I'm definitely a little bit more comfortable."

The Saints see a lot of potential in Griffin, so much so that they activated him from the practice squad in the middle of last season after teams a rash of injuries - particularly by the St. Louis Rams - caused teams to try and get Griffin off of the Saints' practice squad.

Griffin opted to stay with New Orleans and is now firmly entrenched in a battle for the No. 2 spot behind Brees.
