What happens if San Diego wins the Superbowl?...I mean it's safe to say they're going to the playoffs..and Brees has had an outstanding year so far...It really could happen..do you think they may ..keep Brees for one more year..it isn't the same thing as the Baltimore/ Dilfer thing..Brees can make plays down the field..Interesting Scenario...

Rivers vs. Brees

I think they have to let him go. They paid Rivers that huge bonus, and they will have to do the same for Brees. Can you keep two high priced QBs on your roster in the salary cap era? Brees will get some good offers on the open market. If they franchise him they have to pay him top 5 QB money. I dont think you can have that high priced back up anymore.

Well I hate to be the one to kill any hopes that people thing we could end up with on of them. Chargers have or will have 20 million est. under the cap. The plan for the Chargers if need be is to Francise Tag on Brees. YOU DO NOT GET RID OF A QB WHO IS IN-SYNC WITH THE TEAM/OFFENSE. That is like suicide. BOTH QB\'s will be on that roster next year.

They keep Brees reguardless of making it to the Super Bowl. If they end up in the playoffs Brees will be the Starter for next year.

Well...you have to look at it like this...Marty has pretty much lost faith in Brees over the years..and he has been riding the pine off and on for his tenure with the bolts ..Marty commited to his decision when he traded Manning for Rivers...only now has he begun to play like they wanted him to for the last few years...but..the moves have allready been made..And I seriously doubt if Rivers rides the pine..when he was drafted to start for the Bolts...Nah..Brees goes somewhere..and probably underperforms again...and Rivers comes in..and doesn\'t do well either...Marty..the end has begun

I think the Chargers franchise him and trade him off to the highest bidder. Rivers will be the opening day starter for them next season.

OK I can see who doesn\'t have football smarts... you don\'t get rid of a qb who is in-sync with the offense... the chemistry is hard to come by especially at QB. The Job is Brees and its his to lose... until an injury or he falls on his face. Marty is a smart man and on verge of being in the class of great coaches, he isn\'t going to make a decision like that. He also figures hmmm, I have potential of two starting QB\'s which is almost a must need unless you have Farve, Culpepper or Manning. This is a no brainer... you keep and start Brees. Rivers will get his chance but now... you have to ride the cool wind.

I agree completely that you shouldnt change the QB that has chemistry with the offense. I also say they didnt draft Rivers to sit on the bench with his 40 someodd million dollar bonus. Im not saying it makes sense, but in the salary cap era you cant have a back up making that kind of money. I know they have a lot of cap space on that team, but they have other needs that they need to fill. If they franchise him trade talks start with a first rounder. Would San Diego pass up a first rounder? Why would Brees stay unless franchised? He could go to a team that will hand him a starting job next season, instead of even the slightest chance that he will have to compete with Rivers for the starting job. He can go to another team that doesnt have the 4th pick in the draft looking over his shoulder. He has the security of being the QB with the big contract.

San Deigo isn\'t strapped for CAP MONEY... ugh. They have are will have excess of 20 million. Franchiseing Brees will only take about 9 million, assuming they don\'t work out a contract deal. Now I am totally not blowing trading him for picks but when you have chemistry working you don\'t dump it. That is more important. San Diego... Ryan Leaf... HELLO, what makes any think they are going to gamble on a QB when they have one working out just fine.

Don\'t worry I saved my post in word as well as yours, lets see who shows up next year.

So, to understand this, San Diego will franchsise Brees and potentially have to pay him 9 mil, with Phillip Rivers\' contract on the books, and having to sign two first round draft picks? So essentially they will tie up money in the qb position that will be more than what Peyton Manning makes unless someone gives them what they want for Brees? Hard to see. Jon Kitna had a chemistry with the Bengals last year and where is he? On the bench. You don\'t take a qb that high in the draft to let him ride the pine. Ryan Leaf or no.

And why is Ryan Leaf everyone\'s standard when it comes to talking about qbs taking high in the draft? Hasn\'t anyone heard of Peyton or McNabb? A qb taken early can be successful.
