Four Areas the 2014 New Orleans Saints Must Get Better In

Fun fact: In 2013, Drew Brees was the most penalized player on the New Orleans Saints.

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, the 2014 New Orleans Saints are gearing up for another season. This year’s squad looks to make some huge noise when it comes to the postseason. For veterans like Jonathan Goodwin, Champ Bailey, Shayne Graham, Ben Watson, and Drew Brees, it could be one of their final shots to taste a sweet Lombardi Trophy.

When you look at the overall roster of this year’s team, it’s quite impressive, to say the least. I firmly believe that this is one of the most talented teams the Saints have had in quite some time. Furthermore, I also believe that this team, on paper, is better than the 2009 and 2011 team.

Take your blinders off for a second, Who Dat Nation. The New Orleans Saints aren’t perfect. In order for the Saints to have a chance to get into the postseason, and ultimately go deep into the playoffs, I believe there are several areas in which the Saints must put in a better effort than 2013.

I bring those to you, in no particular order.

I would add creating turnovers that result in points. I'll take a statistic drop 4 or 5 spots overall if we can produce more turnovers we can score on.

Here’s something you didn’t know about the New Orleans Saints offense last year: they led the league in holding penalties with 31
I really don't see this much of an issue; I'd rather lead in holding if it keeps Drew from being destroyed as much...

If they're holding, that means their blocking's ****. As long as their blocking's ****, then Drew'll keep going down...

But if and when they get beat; I'd rather a holding flag rather than watching Drew pick himself up looking through his ear holes

Don't have any numbers in front of me but my guess is Brown and Evans were the bulk of the holding calls. and Evans was hurt most of the season. and the delay of game penalties had as much to do with DLP as it did Brees, DLP really struggled with the mental parts of the game this year which was surprising to me.

As an OL-player myself I completely agree. If I get beat I'll still do whatever I can to keep my QB upright. If that means holding or cutting a guy from behind or just wrestle him to the ground I'll do it. It will garner a flag and a yelling from coach but I take that to protect the cube.

Brown had 6 and DLP 5. That's 35% right there. Plus Brown only played 12 games

Oh, I absolutely agree. I'm just sayin' the blocking last year was bad. They got beat a lot. Still not sure if it was the players or the coaching -hopefully not both. Just like most QBs, you start hassling the QB and they'll start throwing INTs. Our OL allowed far too many INTs last year.

Those were the first two that came to mind when I saw that stat. DLP had his share too.
