True...but the salary cap and the escalation penalties have made it prohibitive from cutting a player; hence, you get got penciled in like Grubbs, Lofton...

But that works both ways. This season, Lofton will have to play at a level that proves he can't be replaced by a $4million/year LBer. Hawthorne will have to play better than a $3million. Otherwise, it's cheaper to cut them eat the dead money and pay a much cheaper player.

Utah, per OverTheCap, cutting Lofton and Hawthorne would result in "Cap Savings" of ($2,800,000) and ($1,020,000), respectively; of note when a value is in parenthesis, that's a negative, so they're penciled in, at least to the roster...

But Payton, which is why I love the Coach, will not let that stop him from starting or playing the better player more...

Nice link, JP. It shows we have about $13 million in dead money right now.

Now just what could we do with an additional $13 million?

jeanpierre, those are the 2015 numbers I was referring too. I meant Lofton and Hawthorne have 2014 to prove themselves.

Right, definitely a "transition" year...

Who'd I'd consider the odds on to be on the roster after camp...

Wish list would include another special teams returner, an inside offensive linemen, and an offensive tackle to develop...

See Haralson and Butler fighting it out for a spot and the other not on the team...

Don't like it but Lofton and Hawthorne have Salary Cap Job Security; that doesn't mean Payton won't play better options...

Austin Johnson has opportunity to upset Lorig at FB; will watch that one...

Meachem's salary cap number may make him suspect; but I'm not sure Coach wants that much turnover in the WR and he does offer much even if he was a bust as a Round one pick...

A good cornerback isn't going to make this roster; unless Robinson really regresses or caves during competition, I think he gets another oppotunity...

Sure wished we'd drafted another big Nose Tackle...
