Tim Lelito, Jonathan Goodwin with little separation in New Orleans Saints' center battle

White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. -- A year ago, Tim Lelito was fighting to make the New Orleans Saints' roster.

Now he's trying to win a starting job at a new position against an 12-year veteran, Jonathan Goodwin.

Lelito said he's learned a lot from Goodwin, even if he hasn't been able to share much himself.

"I don't know if you can teach someone who has been in the league for thirteen years something. That's kind of hard to do," he said.

Lelito and Goodwin have largely shared reps with the first team, although Lelito has probably taken a greater portion since the Saints opened training camp at the Greenbrier resort last week.

When he's not snapping to Drew Brees, Lelito said he's watching Goodwin closely.

"When I'm back there, you better believe I'm watching him," Lelito said. "I'm just watching the little stuff that he does right all the time. I'm trying to pick up on that kind of stuff."

Still not getting a real warm feeling about this. Thinking our second round pick could've been much better spent...

Watch and learn.

Keeping banging this drum...

Last year, Payton said he was staying up at night worrying about the left tackle position...

This year, little concern when he mentioned giving Tim Lelito the opportunity...

I don't drink the Loomis cool-aid, but when Payton takes a stance in a situation like this, I'm trusting that he sees he's gonna be alright with Lelito there at center, Goodwin as insurance...

I am not sold yet but Litto is doing all the right stuff. steal all you can from Goodwin. that is why we signed him. center mentor and back up OG to boot.

Both can play guard and center. Both will make the squad. As far as the 2nd rd pick, Baptiste is a future playmaker and shutdown CB.

We are going to get the best out of both of them. Next year we will be able to bring Armstrong in to compete at the center spot. The depth is shaping up nicely.

With the height at receiver in the division, we really needed a 6'3" big type corner though

Well, the scouting reports said he'd be a project so hopefully he'll develop. Remember how long it took Johnny Patrick.

Wait...nevermind.
