Rob Ryan 'ready to get weird' with Saints defense

Around The League's Marc Sessler suggested in April that the New Orleans Saints' defense might be "up to something funky" with more three-safety sets this season.

Now league insiders tell Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal that coordinator Rob Ryan is "quietly crafting an unorthodox" scheme with the potential to change the way defenses play in the future.

"I'm always ready to get weird," Ryan said, per Clark.

The new idea hinges on lining up the best 11 players, with size and position decreasing in importance.

Weird is good. That means it's likely something the other team wouldn't think to expect.

The Defensive Coordinator who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the falcons. The Defensive Coordinator who walks alone is likely to find himself deep in the playoffs"

3 safety/big nickel look was a mainstay on the Haslett/Zook defenses of the early 2000s too. It's just that we have much better players now and use them more creatively. Byrd/Vaccaro/Bush is just a slightly better than Willie "never makes a big play" Clay and Chris "I put the Old in" Oldham. Knight was an OK player I guess but slow as molasses. Guys like him are the reason more teams started putting CB types at free safety.

I haven't heard much from either Sunseri or Ball, not sure if either makes the team
