With last weeks loss the Saints move up to the number 5 pick in the draft as of this week. The site I looked at had the saints taking Derrick Johnson with that pick, and Kyle Orton in the second. The site also has Corey Webster, and Rogers form Auburn slipping into the second round, if that is the case I cant see the saints passing on either one of them to take a QB. Would be a good start to get the best LB and one of the top corners in the draft with your first two picks.

In a way, The anticipation of next years draft exceeds the excitement of watching them play this year....

It\'s sad...

At this point, I\'m happy to be in the top 5 draft picking order...i don\'t really think it will matter much to be moved up a spot or two...to like a top 3 pick...

Man..what if Haslett picks again...And gets \'\'His kind of Player\'\'? and totally bypasses getting Johnson?..or someone like Rolle?..to get another defensive lineman?

More than ever I wish that Haslett would get canned...right now..before he fouls up another draft .

No way Webster falls that far. And even if he does, I see us more taking a shot at Shazor at SS than Webster at corner. Now I love Webster, but we need a big time safety. We have MM and Fakhir and Craft. Get another decent corner in free agency, but lock down that safety position with Shazor from Mich. Then we get a top lb, a top safety, a decent cb in free agency, a decent nose tackle in free agency. Mitchell can start at free and Shazor can play strong, replacing Bellamy. I would love to get Orton, but think his stock has fallen and he will be there in the 3rd round.

Haz wont be picking this season. As long as they dont win more than one more they will get Johnson. This season is over and the only thing I am looking for to is the draft. I dont think you can go into next season without another CB. Brown and MM have had their moments, but their play has been spotty at best. Ortons stock has taken a huge dive, and isnt worthy of that high a pick. I would love to see Webster and Johnson starting on this team next season.

Just asking whodat, but with no good safeties in free agency, and decent corners like Ken Lucas there, you would pass on the chance to replace an aging Bellamy and keep the same safeties? Gleason is a special teamer, that\'s it. Tesucky is a waste. Bellamy is good but like Ambrose, long in the tooth. I don\'t think we can pass on a safety that good if he is there. I think we take a chance at a young corner in the 3rd round but if the league has proven nothing else recently, it is that young safeties can come in and play well. Terrence Kiel in San D., Ken Hamlin and Michael Boulware in Seattle, Roy Williams, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Gibril Wilson was a 5th rounder of the Giants and he is a stud. As for corners, Terrence Newman has looked awful this year, Deangelo Hall was hurt 8 games, Dunta Robinson is good but spotty in Houston, Charles tillman has regressed in Chicago, and I have not heard Chris Gamble or Ricky Manning\'s names all year. IMO, safety is definitely the way to go after Johnson.

Im not saying that saftey isnt an issue, but there are a couple of quality young safties in the league that will become free agents. Only one of them is expected to be franchised. Donovan Darius, Kenoy Kennedy, Bashir from indy, and Terreal Bierria. Darius has the most experience with 7 seasons, but the rest are 4 years or less in the league. I think corner is a little thinner in free agency than safety is. This defense has a lot of needs, and I dont think they could go wrong with any of the players mentioned.

You may be right whodat. I don\'t think we could go wrong with either. I would love to have Webster and Johnson. But if all those safeties are on the open market, I would definitely give Webster a LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG look if he is on the board with our second pick. If not rogers. I still would love to have Shazor though. Maybe we can get Mike McMahon and a second or first rounder for Aaron Brooks. I know this is all wild speculation, but it\'s all in fun and with realizing these are remote possibilities.

Need more help than a safety -- I will be very upset if we don\'t use a top 5/6 pick on a linebacker or shut down corner. May not be the case but one of our big problems at safety may be because they really are not truly playing the safety position. With our pathetic running defense and linebackers they are usually out of safety position to assist the run d and expend way too much energy in stopping the run. Because of this they become more predictable and easily nullified. This theory is at least worth not drafting a safety.

I don\'t buy your theory 4saint. First, Bill Belichek said Tebucky Jones was a dumb player and they were glad New orleans wanted him. He has not proven Bill wrong yet. Second, Bellamy is getting old. And he can\'t cover, even though he is great in run support. Third, Mitchell will get one of the safety spots, if for no other reason than he seems to be the fastest. I am sure game experience will help him also. Lastly, Gleason, while I am happy to see him out there, is a special teamer, or at least a couple of years away. He is what Bill Bates used to be for Dallas. Great on special teams and competent when pressed into duty. A top notch safety is a great move for this team, especially with all the young safeties I have listed making impacts in their rookie seasons. Also, our cb position is not the worst in the league, and improving our run D and pass rush with Johnson at lb, stud ss in the draft, free agent nose tackle and a decent free agent corner like Ken Lucas, we have no true need to draft another. IMO, safety is a more urgent need than cb, whether it is addressed in the draft or free agency. the most glaring need is a lb and a nt.

If Brodney Poole or Donte Nicholson drop into the bottom half of the second round, I wouldn\'t be angry if we traded up to get them.

If they fall into the 3rd, I\'d do whatever it took to get one of them.

I\'d rather have Derrick Johnson and Lance Mitchell first though.

Everybody needs to take a look at micheal boley from southern miss this guy is good and would really like to see him in a saints uni if we cant get d. johnson ahmad brooks from virginia is a stud too. Middle linebacker from louisville will be the steal of the draft ROBERT MCCUNE

With a couple exceptions, safety is thinnnnn this coming year. But we need to address the position. Would love to add Davis, cause he\'s a gamer and a leader, and damn, he loves to hit. But, you can\'t have it all, when it comes to the draft ;)
Wouldn\'t mind seeing a QB taken, but not until at least the third round, and let him season a few years. Charlie Frye\'s stock may drop, cause scouts will point out his arm, but he\'s a gamer too. Friend from Penn State saw him play this year and told me to watch this kid. And we all saw Derek Anderson this year against LSU. He made some questionable decisions, but he can throw. And he\'s huge- he\'s the same size as Roethlisberger, but would be a bigger project than Frye.

We agree about the thin safety position BNB. It has to be addressed. What do you think about taking a chance on Jason Campbell in the 3rd if he is still on the board? I think he could be Brooks without the as many mistakes, of course if Haslett and crew are gone so they can\'t ruin him.

Jason Campbell? Yeah thats all we need is anouther dumb QB the only reason he is even being talked about is because of this year. and he was only as good as their running game was. He camp lead he makes dumb plays and it would be anouther wasted pick. Look at last year what were they ranked at the begining of the season ? and why did they drop so fast in the polls? because the didn\'t score a TD for 3 games. Thats the problem people think one year makes you a great QB just like with Brees, he has done nothing up until the signed a QB to take his place then he bust his butt to try and keep his job. No to Jason Campbell And No to Brew Brees!

Nnone thinks one year makes anyone a great qb, winning does. Jason Campbell has had a different offense every year he has been at Auburn. Have you watched him grow the last few years? Noone is sayign he should come in and start right away. Daunte Culpepper came from a small school and sat the bench a year, made lots of mistakes when he started, and look at him now. If you are waiting for Leinart or rodgers or Eli or Peyton Manning to get traded to us, it is nto gonna happen. Since Jason Campbell or Drew Brees or not worth a look, please tell me who is. Brooks?

Boccal 12-10-2004 02:20 PM

Well I have watched Jason play every game for the past four years. He looks just like AB does in the pros he is not that good. There is no quick fix to any of the problems here. But to Draft Campbell even in the 6th would be a bad pick to me. If we had to pick a QB in the draft that could be there in the later rounds it would be Alex Smith from Utah. We need a leader on the field and Campbell is not one so if you want Brooks part 2 the Draft Jason

Okay, I see where you are coming from. But Brooks may also have been a product of Haslett\'s spin machine and a lack of good coaching. Whatever the reason, he is ruined goods now. Campbell has gotten better. Look what NFL Europe did for Rohan Davey. Patriots rave about him to the tune of him being their guy if Brady goes down. ROHAN DAVEY. It\'s all in coaching. With good coaching, Campbell can be good and overcome mistakes. He has grown immensely this year as a player. He reads defenses much better and hardly turns the ball over. I would not be averse to Alex Smith though. Kid seems like a winner.
