Ok the good the bad and the ugly

What impressed you
What did not

I have to go back and re watch the game but I did see most of the second half. Cooks looked good and Cadet finally got it going. I saw a couple hard hits on ST.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Good Griffin, Ingram, Robinson, offensive line ; tyrunn walker, Patrick Robinson, KV,

Bad Rod Sweeting, Shaun Graham, Brandon Coleman,

Ugly the entire defense in 4th quarter

Shock value : 6'5 220lbs Toon being slammed by a 5'8 184lbs rookie cornerback

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Good: Griffin was poised and accurate. Ingram and Khiry were both great. Cooks showed his big-play potential. The O-line (especially run blocking). Playcalling was outstanding. Defensive line got big-time penetration from the front 4. Inside linebackers were decent. Humber, specifically, was all over the place. DB's were very good. I was really encouraged to see P-Rob challenging receivers up on the line and being aggressive. White made a few nice plays too. Coverage teams were mostly good. Morstead hit some monster punts.

Bad: Linebackers aren't any faster than last year. It's not a huge problem, we can scheme around it by bringing Vaccaro/Bush down in the box. But there were some run plays off tackle that were a little scary and Hawthorne got his butt handed to him in pass coverage twice. None of the 4-5-6 WR candidates really stood out in any way. None of the depth corners (Sweeting, Dixon, Brooks) looked very good and Baptiste showed a lack of ball skills.

Ugly: Graham missing that 33 yard XP, ugh. Brandon Coleman, ugh. Had 2 bad plays besides that god-awful drop. He might have played himself off the depth chart. Reddick was terrible! Reminds me of Jonathan Casillas, and not just because of his jersey number. No instincts whatever, it's like the Malcolm Jenkins version of a linebacker. Strozier was really starting to impress me until he stepped out of bounds, come on you have to know where you are on the field and that could've been a first down.

Incomplete: Flanders, who I thought looked good in his one carry. Dimke made his one FG but that was a chip shot. McCown barely played, but I think they already know what they've got with him.

Random observation: Khiry has long hair now, and with their jersey numbers being so similar there is absolutely no way to tell him and Cadet apart, unless the camera is really close on them.

Good: Griffin standing in there and delivering the ball to Cooks on that TD with a defender bearing down on him

First/Second team O-line all looked good IMO. Huge holes for the backs to run through.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Our defensive line had some insane pressure tonight, especially the younger guys. Foster/Walker/Hicks all looked like studs.

Both Lelito and Goodwin looked good, but Rams didn't play Brockers or Langford. I thought this would be a better test for the OL.

So.... how about our turnover-making-machine defense?

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

The GOOD for me .... Roll tide was very good and so was Khiry. Cooks did a lot of things well and will be dangerous once he is on the same page as Brees. Griffin did some really good things and will definitely challenge Luke for the #2 QB spot.

The BAD ... Baptiste was surprisingly slow to the ball, didn't square his hips and appeared to be a step behind.

And the UGLY... Coleman = yuck.

Rough start, but some serious moments.
Ingram was the shocker of the game. He was running insane.

Both o-lines looked compromised. We did have a few starters held out.

No Byrd, limited action for Lewis, Vaccaro, Robinson...and our back up CBs are pretty bad. Back up safeties look awesome though, Pierre Warren dropped an easy one tonight.

Exactly!

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

I could see Byrd and Lewis racking up INTs if our d-line keeps getting pressure like that. If we get some pressure off the edge we'll get some FFs too.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Anyone else notice that Khiry doesn't go down on the first hit? Dude is a tackle breaking machine.

I think Byrd will go on IR and be the one designation that can come back and play after the deadline.

Why is that? He is already practicing; they would have already put him on IR and brought in somebody else if that was the plan...

Very Pierre Thomas like. His running style isn't much like PT, but he has that same way of slip-sliding around tackles and slithering himself through tiny holes. He's the real deal. If we don't have at least a top-10 running team this year I'll be surprised.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Grading the drafted rookies:

Brandin Cooks = A- good; he showed great explosiveness & willing to block

Bad : learn how to draw a penalty or come off the line a little stronger from aggressive corner

Ugly; the rams had great coverage & hang time on punt return

Stanley Jean Baptiste; B-, Good, great tight coverage, held his lane on Special Team

Bad; too raw and need to be brought slowly; had tight coverage thru out the game but need to be a little faster on anticipating when the ball is in the air

Ugly; didn't seem familiar w/wr motion on man to man and let the wr get too much separation

Khari Fortt C good; played with some aggression coming off blocks

Bad; overran a few plays

Ugly; only one tackle

Vinnie Sunseri C+ good ,played under control played to the whistle with a lot of hustle

Bad; didn't do anything spectacular to put himself ahead of Marcus Ball & Pierre Warren unless Saints planning on carrying 6 safeties he gotta step it up

Ugly ;coverage skills remind me of Roman Harper

Ronald Powell C, good, got a sack ,

Bad, awareness look slow coming after block, need another technique besides speed rush

Ugly, most likely practice squad

Tavon Rooks A+ good played great ,made blocks and got to second level blocks with ease

Bad. He was playing against ram's 3rd or 4th defense

Ugly , called for holding, other than that played great

The biggest positive I saw was Ingram. He finally looked like the back I have been hoping for him to be all along.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Most has been covered, I'll add what I haven't read.

Strozier - a lot of work to do but he was Sprolin.

Toon - Still not a fan, for a 3rd year player he looks very questionable, awkward, and I don't see 100% being given. Nothing has changed from his rookie year.

#44 Brian Dixon - just ..... Ouch, he is painful to watch.

P. Robinson - Didn't tell his name once.

Their defense had a few players out as I understand it, our ground game looked fairly solid but I'm not going to get too high until we show consistency across a few games. I'm not really interested in 300 yards on the ground every 5th game as I am 150 on the ground each game.

With so many starters not playing it's very difficult to get a feel for each unit.

Last year KC moved the ball at will on us in the opening PS game. Defense ended up being 5th in the league.

Where was Bailey?

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

well, here are my 2 cents, you know, for what it is worth.

The Oline did well run blocking but the pass blocking was weak. Both McCown and Griffin were getting pressured almost every snap and the plays could not develop. It might have been bad pocket presence by the 2 QBs but it just seemed at the snap there was a defender in the backfield.

McCown threw a terrible pass right at Long for the INT. It was going to be a screen to Cooks and he had tons of daylight. I would have liked to see that play work out. It is evident we need Drew as none of these QBs are the real future.

Curtis Lofton missed the assignment on the 1st TD and that is worrisome as he is not a rookie or young 2nd/3rd year guy. I know the defense is trying to work out the kinks but you should at least know your assignments when running a vanilla defense.

Brandin Cooks played well. I am not sure who it was in the message boards who asked for just a taste of what Cooks can do and nothing more as to not unveil our secret weapon, but they seem to have gotten their wish. Cooks wasn't 'all world' but that touchdown catch gave just enough to keep fans satiated.

I forgot an ugly.
Whatthuhfuq is with Gregg Wiliams? Who has grey/blond/brown hair and a jet black goatee?

Witness Protection? Ate some Kiwi shoe polish?

Little disappointed in White. I don't think he can play outside.

I didnt get to see the game, so I have to ask.....was Coleman really tbat bad? I read that he was slow with his progress during OTAs, but seemed to catch on during camp.Do yall think hes worth holding on to or was one game enough to consider him done?

I would rather a guy like Andy Tanner who has shown he has the heart and work ethic to be an NFL player. I get that Coleman is 6'6" and a HUGE target for Brees, but I don't think Brees would trust him in a real game scenario. I also think Toon might be on the outs. He had his chance last season and dropped some crucial balls and then in this game he caught passes but then he would go down on the first hit. Missed 2 1st downs because he couldn't move the ball up the field.

Let's hope that Coleman can bounce back like Stills did last year.

And that spin move... it's a beautiful thing. Even when he is tackled, he lunges forward for positive yards.

The ugly is also that lovely INT from the now former backup QB, McCown.

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

I'm starting to lean Dimke.

Ingram is going to play well enough to get a huge contract next year. Just not by the Saints.

Coleman was playing for the Rams. I'm fairly sure of that.

NFL Network did an entire segment on a QB pressure and a RB tackle by #96 on the Rams. What is this world really coming to at this point?

We really need kick and punt returners. What we have is pedestrian.

After seeing some of the "next men up" last night, I can fully appreciate the caution.

I'm not saying they stunk up the place but there was a definite drop off.

LOL...

We have Cooks...

Years before that we had guys like Sproles and Bush. What we need is a new ST coordinator. Year after year we have a ton of talent and our ST suck. Greg must have some friends higher up cause his ass should have been gone long ago.

73Saint 08-09-2014 11:34 AM

Re: Ok the good the bad and the ugly

Why is McMahon still our ST's coach? Is it just me? Special teams in general looked stale as usual, and we got exposed/caught off guard on yet another 4th down fake.

That entire group still scares me. Also doesn't help that Shayne Graham was the first PAT miss @ the new distance.
