Tampa 2, New Orleans 5 defense?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Wonder if they will name the 5 safety scheme Ryan is implementing after us? I have a feeling it is really going to catch on in the league....

I get your point, but wouldn't it be New Orleans 3 defense?

The 2 in Tampa more or less just signifies the "type" of coverage. Two corners playing a short zone, safeties over the top. We play a hybrid nickel, which is a formation. It's kind of apples and oranges, I didn't mean to **** this up for you though. Lol.

There's already a name for it, "big nickel". It's not like it's a super new thing that Rob Ryan just invented either. Actually Haslett's team in 2000 played a lot of big nickel: Fred Weary and Kevin Mathis at corner; Sammy Knight, Darren Perry and Chris Oldham at safety.

We don't need any names; isn't having a top 5 defense good enough?

We don't need any names and no, a top five isn't good enough.
