Brees among vets expected to sit tonight

Drew Brees is expected to watch from the sideline tonight when the New Orleans Saints host the Tennessee Titans inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Although the Saints didn’t make any official announcement, it’s a virtual certainty that Brees won’t play for the second straight week, considering he hasn’t gone through a full practice yet since suffering a strained oblique on Aug. 1.

The bigger curiosity will be next Saturday’s preseason tilt at the Indianapolis Colts. Brees looks as though he might be healthy enough to return to practice next week. And that will be the Saints’ third exhibition game, which is typically the last time the starters play any meaningful snaps during the preseason.

So the Saints will have to weigh what’s the bigger threat -- a risk of re-injury or a risk of rust in Week 1 of the regular season. Stay tuned.

Among other prominent Saints not expected to play tonight are guard Jahri Evans, safety Jairus Byrd, cornerback Champ Bailey, linebacker David Hawthorne, receiver Kenny Stills, defensive tackle John Jenkins, linebacker Victor Butler and fullback Erik Lorig -- all of whom are in various stages of injury rehabs.

Guard Ben Grubbs and cornerback Patrick Robinson are also questionable after practicing on a limited basis this past week.

A lot of names on that list.

It's like the "Saints Lite", all the Black and Gold football, half the players
