Jean Baptiste

Anyone seeing positives from this kid? Im not. I understand he's "raw" but damn...

Re: Jean Baptiste

I think he's probably right where the coaches expected him to be. That's my .02

Did you say raw?

After watching the game today, for the most part he was in position and made good reads. Didn't do anything detrimental

Re: Jean Baptiste

I thought he played OK against the Titans. Got beat a couple times in the middle of the field but the defense as a whole played poorly so you can't really single him out.

I did see him come up in run support a couple times and he tackles well, so that's a good sign.

saintsfan1976 08-16-2014 07:24 AM

Re: Jean Baptiste

I saw the run support on one play but so far in coverage he's looked pretty bad.

Bad as in looking the opposite way of where the play is happening.

I agree. At the same time, he's a rookie and it's his second preseason game. We have plenty of depth. At best, he's our dime back. All we really should be expecting of him this season is good play on special teams. Anything extra would be just gravy.

That is unless Lewis's injury becomes nagging. How do you feel about Robinson, White, Baily and Jean Baptiste on the field? Do we know what happened to Lewis? Looked like turf toe...

papz 08-16-2014 07:50 AM

Re: Jean Baptiste

I think we'll see more safeties on the field if something like that occurs. I think worse case scenario with Lewis is that he misses a game or two. I hope it isn't anything serious.

Quick conversation reenactment after the SJB pass break up:

Wife: That's your homeboy huh #33
Me: Yeah SJB
Wife: Well he sho... need to be his ass in better position! Didn't he give up a TD last week. ( I did explain to her that he was in perfect position last week and given the time to develop he would come up with that play)
Me: He's a rookie. He's learning the position.
Wife: What the Hell was he doing his whole college career
Me: Actually he was converted from a wide receiver so he has only been a corner 2 seasons.
Wife: Maybe they should have drafted him for that....... When you put that jersey on you supposed to be able to come out here and play.

Is there any such thing as needs time to develop, or Raw when it comes to talent starved Saints fans. What's the rush? We didn't rush Terron Armstead.... and now look at him. I haven't seen SJB beaten completely on any plays. And yesterday he actually got in front of a route, and probably makes a play if the ball is better thrown. There shouldn't be any rush. You have the veteran presence and the depth the bring SJB up properly. Use it!!!!

Re: Jean Baptiste

He's still a 2 year project. I like his upside and I'm sure Ryan has a plan for him in certain packages but he doesn't look like he's ready to move ahead of White or Robinson yet.

blackangold 08-16-2014 09:39 AM

Re: Jean Baptiste

Biggest issue he has is playing "off coverage" he gets beat all day by the short throws.

awesome that your wife gets into the game like that.

Re: Jean Baptiste

Baptiste will be fine. Every rookie corner strugles, that's a fact. P. Peterson was below average (in coverage) in his rookie year. I'm worried about White. If we don't use him right we will have Malcolm Jenkins 2.0. Great play, awful play...

Re: Jean Baptiste

I guess I'm the only one who actually likes what I've seen from SJB. He looks like he plays the run very well, the times he has been beaten he actually has had good coverage. He just needs to learn to get his head around.

I don't know why people are so down on him. If you want someone to be down on look at Wade and Sweeting those two are garbage.

As far as SJB goes, skies the limit for that kid. IMHO.

I'm with you. Watching him last night, I thought he had good coverage overall and made some good decisions out there. Plus he was good in run support. It will be a typical rookie CB year for him, with high and low points, but I think he'll really start to blossom in year two.

Re: Jean Baptiste

The positive I've seen from SJB is that he's in the receiver's hip pocket. He's just not locating the ball.....yet.

Like the run toughness though

Agree and that's a good thing. Locating the ball will come with more experience.

As a Saints fan, I hope he gets it turned around; felt there were better options in a deep draft class at CB...

Second rounders need to contribute immediately...

I watched Pierre Desir the other day, you wanna talk about someone who looks lost. Just had to throw that in there.

Hell no. Some other team would pick him up in a heartbeat. His talent is just too great.

Absolutely no way a second round pick will make it through the waiver process...

It could be the first time in history that all 31 teams place a claim on a cut player.

Just how many "projects" can we actually carry on the final 53? We already have Griffin. Why don't we trade him for someone we can actually use? OL? Place kicker anyone?

Because he is a 6'3" physical corner and one we desperately need; especially with all the height at receiver in our division :bng:

If it came down to a choice between a third QB and Jean Baptiste, I'd keep Griffin and Baptiste and see if they develop.

He is playing like a rookie with very little positional awareness. But that can be coached up and he would greatly benefit from pro coaches.

Corey White is relentlessly bashed, and he was a 2 or 3 year project selected in the 5th round.

If SJB doesn't look like Richard Marshall by game 3, those same people will start bashing this pick.

SJB is not, and never was supposed to be a starter in 2014. Those that think that just don't get the whole draft process.

He is not going to be on the practice squad. He would be claimed of the squad on day one
