What are you looking for in tonight's game?

What are you looking for in tonight's game?

1. Nick Toon - he's been great at practice, but that's just it, practice. Needs to be a gamer also. He'll have Brees throwing him the ball tonight, so this will be his best opportunity to step his game up. if he doesn't, he may have worked himself off the roster

2. Champ Bailey / Patrick Robinson - they are both battling to be the #2 CB behind Keenan Lewis. Robinson hasn't played in a game in over a year and Bailey seems to have been out most of TC. With live competition on the field, we'll see where they both are and the winner of the opposite starting corner spot may come down to tonight

3. Tim Lelito - he'll be snapping to Brees tonight for the first time (provided he starts). He's young blood and coaches have had no problem giving the young guys the opportunity should they earn it. He has the size and strength to man the position, so if he displays the technique, helps solidify the middle of the pocket, gets push in the run game, and makes the proper calls on the line, he has a good chance to be the opening day starter

4. Jarius Byrd - it's his first game since last season and his first real, live hitting situation (in practice they were in a helmets and shells), so we'll get the opportunity to see what he can bring. We'll also see how well he, Vaccaro and Bush work together since he hasn't had much on field time with them to get used to their tendencies, strengths, weaknesses and vice versa. Hopefully the acclimate quickly

5. Brandin Cooks - provided he plays tonight after his stomach virus, he'll have Brees throwing to him as well so we will have the opportunity to see the timing the two have together and what Cooks is able to do with one of the most elite QB's getting him the ball

6. Front four - Hicks, Bunkley, Jordan and Gallette, always good to see the type of pressure these four can generate all by themselves. A good pass rush, and we have a VERY good pass rush, helps out the defensive backfield and can help generate turnovers, something we're trying to improve in this year

Re: What are you looking for in tonight's game?

1) Chemistry between Brees with those not named Colston and Graham
2) CB battle with Bailey & PRob
3) How well Byrd fits in "The Dude's" defensive scheme
4) Kicker battle...if this game is 10-7 I'm gonna get irritated
5) RG1 or McCown? Please not both...RG1 needs a good game to solidify 2nd spot
6) Center spot, specifically short yardage situations
7) Return coverage...do we have enough talent to overcome McMahon's jackassery? 7a) Can SJB step-up in coverage teams?
8) Strozier not showing too much talent tonight so we can safely secure him to the PS
9) Who steps up for that last WR spot...hoping youngsters can outright swipe that from Meachem so we can have that option of cutting him and bringing him back later if needed. Nice luxury to have.
10) MOST IMPORTANT: NO INJURIES

Pat Kirwan make a great point the other night about bubble players.

Look at the 1st punt return team. That usually tells you who's currently at the top of the list for the 53 man roster. That unit is more about preparing than evaluating.

I'm most interested in see Byrd for the first time. I want to see how well he and the other safeties work together, I know it'll take some time to "gel"

That is an awesome perspective and makes a ton of sense. Never thought of it that way, though I'm not an awesome thinker.

Thanks a bunch!

Mainly I was looking for our starting offense and defense to look good, and they did, well mostly.

Re: What are you looking for in tonight's game?

20-10 at the half, with most of our #1s still in, sans Drew...

After watching the game...

1. Toon didn't do anything to stand out. Had a potential deep pass knocked away from him. But Stills went out with a quad injury, and I'm guessing its the same quad he just came back from. If that's the case and he can't start the season, Toon makes it. If Stills is good to go week 1, then Toon is now out

2. I think Champ only played a handful of plays tonight, and rightfully so as he just came back from whatever injury he had. Didn't really notice, or hear, Robinson's name called much, so there's that...

3. Lelito was in during the second quarter, but Brees was out. He seemed up and down tonight, some plays looking stout and others looking like a UDFA.

4. Byrd seemed to fly around the field from what I noticed. He's truly a "center fielder" who can cover a huge portion of the field. It's going to be nice having him back there. Darren Sharper 2.0?

5. Cooks was held out of the game. Would have loved to see Brees throwing to him

6. Front four seemed to get a lot of push and made Luck have to move around in the pocket, effecting the accuracy of some of his throws. Was happy with our front four

Your thoughts on the game??

Hawthorne, Lofton. Solid guys but that's it. Too slow.
Powell looked good. Knox also.

Maybe next year Mickey can surprise us with another FA (this time LB).

Btw. PT looks faster than ever. I'm so glad we kept him over sproles.

Re: What are you looking for in tonight's game?

Stills going down is not good. Cooks will take some of that slack and Morgan shows some flash, but Meachem and Toon are almost always invisible.

Robinson has never impressed me. Bailey's age and health just screams of a guy who's done. It is what it is.

Goodwin looks like the starter at C. Four proven vets along the line in Grubbs, Goodwin, Evans and Strief is the best way to go.

Byrd is the real deal. He and Vaccaro are truly a dynamic duo.

The D-Line is the real deal. Although Hicks needs to play smarter. Love the fire but you can get stupid penalties. Good to see Jenkins get some snaps.

Is it just me or does K. Robinson look like less of a back this year?

The LB's are the clear weak spot on the defense. No playmakers.

I like Dimke for his upside but Graham is kicking well too.

McNown looks like the holder, so I guess the Saints are going to keep 3 QB's.

The run/pass ratio looks good.
