Clock management at end of regualtion

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I understand fans are upset, mainly because Colston & Ingram went out of bounds on consecutive plays, but to me getting the TD is more important than the clock....

It is, no doubt.Bbut when you're playing a team that is shredding your defense the clock has to be on your mind too. Remember SF in that playoff game? When our defense isn't getting the job done, we have to milk the clock. As soon as we scored I was thinking, uh oh, this is SF all over again. Its a long season but we have some work to do.

Re: Clock management at end of regualtion

We had THREE timeouts

They go down in bounds with 1:30 left and Atlanta has to burn two timeouts
We leave them with at least 20 seconds less on the clock

If we needed the clock, we had the timeouts
No way to get in trouble

Bad clock management

End of the first half too
Cost us 3

Also, the D should never have allowed them to get to the FG distance. But, I have to admit I was half expecting the outcome that took place when I saw how much the O left on the clock.

Re: Clock management at end of regualtion

It got quiet didn't it Hagen?

On our final possession in the 4th Qtr of regulation we were down by 4 points.

The drive was 4 passes and 5 runs with an Ingram TD @ 1:24 left on the clock.

On our last possession before the 1/2 we kicked a field goal with 00:24 left on the clock.

You can manage a clock but you cant micro manage it. You cant decide before a drive that we are going to move the ball 70 yards in 2:31. You have to first get to where you need to be for a FG if you need 3 then you can burn time; or if you need a TD you focus on getting that TD first then worry about the clock.

If the New Orleans Saints or any team could score at will like some assume they would be repeat Super Bowl winners.

Anyone want to do their own research the play-by-play as at the bottom.

And just as absurd, one could claim that we just didn't score fast enough. If we had scored 45 seconds faster we probably get the ball back in time to kick a FG and win in regulation.

4 passes and 5 runs on a drive and the talking point is 'pass heavy as usual'.

Re: Clock management at end of regualtion

Yeah, that surprised me, that both Ingram and Colston went outta bounds. I would've thought in the huddle someone would have been telling everyone to stay in bounds to force Atlanta to burn their timeouts.

Re: Clock management at end of regualtion

Do we all know the difference between pushed and ran out of bounds?

The NFL does
