The subject is fat guys in the NFL, particularly fat defensive linemen. Let me start with a story I may have alluded to before, but I think is apropos.

I'm in Honolulu with my son, Mike. We're watching a Japanese TV station, which is presenting a Sumo tournament. We're watching match after match, and if you're into betting, as we are, this is a fine thing, because we're wagering on every bout -- he picks first, then next bout I do, and so on.

Toward the end of the evening, Konishiki, the 560-pound champion shows up. He gets down in a four-point defensive lineman's stance, rises up and hits his opponent with a perfect two-hand, straight-arm shiver and knocks him out of the ring. A pure football technique.

"Holy hell," I'm thinking. "Put a guy like this on the nose, or maybe two of them at the DTs, and who's going to run on you?"

The idea of it haunted me, and when we got back to the mainland I called Al Davis about it. I mean who else but the Raiders would go for something like this?
Read for more. I'm not sure that the Dr is actually making any argument, but he does make some interesting observations. Since the most glaring need we have right now is for a NT, maybe we could glean something from what the Dr has seen?

I\'ve heard this before and even have pondered myself why NFL teams don\'t consider this and I guess it comes down to the one things Sumo guys are missing, athleticism. In the Nfl you see d-lineman chasing guys from behind, going sideline to sideline, etc. If you have 4th and goal from the one inch line then maybe a guy like that would fit. But in the middle of the field, they would be a liability. Teams would just negate them by running stretches and sweeps and screens. Fat giys like that would take themselves out of the play.

Would also think that stamina would have something to do with it. I doubt a man that size could play on and off for 60 minutes straight.

Ooops, sorry, BnB has Z\'s point exactly. I think his premise is something along the lines of: \"Fat guys aren\'t giving their teams a profound advantage.\" Something about not being able to play the second half.

Nope, not a contest.

I just posted the first few paragraphs and gave the link. I really should have posted some of the more pertinent parts. Z works through several fat guys and breaks them down on their relative merits. Grady and Hand both made the list.

Where was Jonathan (Super Buffet) Sullivan? Did he make it??

Ahh, just what we need ... 560-pound Konishiki dropping dead from heat exhaustion at the Metarie practice facility while running sprints outdoors in the middle of August! We\'ve got rumored voodoo and ancient Indian curses, but we ain\'t got a Japanese curse yet! I say sign him up.

The solution would be to have two sets of fat guys. One for the first half and one for the second. :hungry:

The real \"fly in the ointment\" is; Top Sumo guys make at least ten times what d-linemen do, what with endorsements and geisha for what amounts to a few seconds work.
Wait. Isn\'t that the amount of time and effort that Sully/ Fatty puts into a game? We may already have the inside track on this one.
