Today Coach Payton seems to be in a little better mood than his more than firey post game press conference yesterday. When asked about Drew Brees' performance yesterday, especially the giveaway INT, he had the following to say:

"I just finished talking with him, obviously he would want to have the one interception back..."
"We got a little more pressure and some tight man, and a few of those throwaways were smart plays," said Payton, whose team slipped to 2-4 with the Green Bay Packers headed into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for a Sunday night game. "Yet we (have) a couple of opportunities in there to maybe fit a throw; those percentages that include that last drive where you are hoping to make a few plays.

"But for two-thirds of the game we were operating with the rhythm and efficiency that we wanted. We will get better at that clean up some of those things."

Re: Sean Payton in presser on Drew Brees

Obviously he'd like to have the interception back, so why does he continue to make dumb throws every week?

Has he played a week where he hasn't thrown a pick?

I thought he played a lot better. He threw a clean deep ball. He threw a crappy INT for sure. But in weeks past that would have been 3 int's. He simply grounded the ball when the play wasn't there instead of forcing it. Much rather that, but yes the INT he did throw stunk.

I'm not one of the yahoo's out there saying brees is done or needs to be replaced. I remember what it was like having bad qb's back in the day. However, the whole weekend I was just hoping and praying that brees wouldn't throw a pick.

Did anyone ask brees directly what he was looking at on that play? It appears a lot of brees pick either come from trying to make something out of nothing or not seeing where he's throwing the ball.

Re: Sean Payton: Drew Brees is least of 2-4 Saints' worries

Sean Payton is right. Everybody that's unhappy with Brees doesn't realize how good we have it right now with him.

Brees was about the only reason we even had a chance to win that game in the first place.

over all that was a hell of showing against the #1 defense in the NFL on the road. that is for a team that has develop issues of losing on the road for two year now.

what we learned is the saints defense looks pretty good against a below average Detroit offense that was without their #1 WR in the NFL. i will take it but with tempered enjoyment. GB does suffer on the road and they are 4th in the nfl for pts scored and red hot. now we will see what they can do.

i hope Rob and the front office took notes on that front 7 in Detroit.

Plus they seem to be learning how to finish a game.

It is not Drew fault alone. the entire Offense needed to step up their game in the last 5 min to win this one, same goes for the defense

we didn't they did

The general consensus is when you have an effective running game, it makes the QB's job a little easier

So tell me, how does brees have 7 interceptions when we have the 6th best running game in the league

Because he is making stupid decisions.

2010 he threw 22 interceptions, he's on pace for roughly 20 this year

Elite QB's don't do that

The defense has been terrible all year, but brees isn't exactly playing lights out.

Re: Sean Payton: Drew Brees is least of 2-4 Saints' worries

I'm not at all against Brees. He may not be the QB he once was, but he's still better than most in the league. That being said, I thought it was kinda strange that he lost several QB competitions at camp....actually, did he even win any? I seem to remember his accuracy wasn't that great. I know accuracy isn't everything, and he's still better than our backups, but it did raise a little red flag for me. Even though he's good at a lot of things, accuracy was one of the things that made him stand out IMO. Who knows, maybe its just a bad year for him and he'll bounce back next year, and I hope to God he does. I still think that if we get an O line like we used to have, it would definitely help him. It sure does seem like as the O lines performance started to diminish, so did Drew's.

Re: Sean Payton: Drew Brees is least of 2-4 Saints' worries

His arm is not going to come back to what it was because of age and his past injury...

It was a testament to Brees' commitment to his game and modern medical technology that Dr. James Andrews' staff were able to build a new rotator cuff for him to continue his career...

The Saints took a major gamble then to sign and commit to him as the starting quarterback (Seem to remember Payton wanted to bring Romo here)...

I doubt seriously he trains at the level his rehab sx took him; in addition, having all that new found wealth of a growing family and his financial boom, he has a lot to lose personally...

And that's where I believe the real rub is; I've posted comparisons to illustrated, with some humor, to Stallone's Rocky III characater and in watching his expressions on the field, he looks like he's playing scared and not that fearless, killer-instinct quarterback we saw in the 2009 run...

Look, he's a saavy and smart quarterback and that's why he's played as well as he has; and he's been spot on in his politics in his franchise investments in the city and moving his family here during the season...

But the decline in his long-ball game, despite having one of his better deep connections to Stills than he's had in a while, plus his salary cap gobbling contract and the misdirected overpay along the offensive line to protect him is a big part why we don't smash and put teams away...

Thus exposing a neglected personnel situation on defense that is unable to protect seemingly solid leads late in games...

I would be very disappointed if he's extended beyond this current contract and we should have been developing a quarterback since he was signed to this current deal...

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Re: Sean Payton: Drew Brees is least of 2-4 Saints' worries

When you throw it 50 times a week, and the defense knows you're going to throw it 50 times a week, chances are a couple aren't going to be perfect, and most likely a defender will find his way in front of a couple. More runs. Less predictable passes. Success.
