Sean Payton, Shayne Graham say kicker will respond to being challenged

Not sure how much sense it is to tryout a kicker that you cut for missing FGs to potentially replace a kicker that has missed a few FGs.

METAIRIE, La. -- Shayne Graham hadnít missed a kick in more than two months before he pulled his 42-yard field-goal attempt wide left in this past Sundayís 41-10 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

But that was enough to put him on the hot seat along with several other teammates who are being scrutinized more than ever by coach Sean Payton this week.

The Saints tried out four free agent kickers Wednesday before ultimately sticking with Graham.

When asked if itís possible to be unhappy with a kicker who is 18 of 20 on field-goal attempts this season, Payton said, "Yeah, you could be unhappy off the last performance."

"And yet I pay close attention to his numbers. We wanted to look at what was available, how they did," continued Payton, who said itís common for NFL teams to take a look at possible alternatives at a variety of positions throughout the course of a season. "But, look, Shayne is going to respond no different than the rest of these guys weíre challenging. Heíll respond."

Graham, who is no stranger to the NFL business after playing for 10 different teams in a 14-year career, agreed that he needs to be more worried about how he responds than the challenge itself.

"All I can do is control whatís in front of me, not upstairs," said Graham, adding that he wasnít taken aback when Payton had stern words for him on the sideline after his miss, because that's expected when any player makes a mistake. "Iíd probably be concerned if there wasnít something said to me."

Misses 1 kick in 2 months and his job is being threatened...

Colston drops everything thrown his way week after week and still starts...

Goodwin gets destroyed consistently and is injured yet still plays...

Hawthorne too slow and out of position, also fighting injuries yet still plays...

Maybe we should cut the water boy because the hydration is effecting the defense and that's why they're so awful.

I don't get it...

We can't get rid of Colston due to contract and cap, but you're rifht. We just cant. Can't let him go in the off season either

Definitely has a "hitch" in the flight of his kicks, however...

pulled his 42-yard field-goal? not like crossed a pile on or anything. this mind game i do not understand after the saints front office and coaches have not chased any serious young talent in years. with this practice what do you expect?

Graham is about as good as it gets from your selected player pool your drawing from.

His make % is good but he uses up all of the uprights space ... even on xtra points. His kicks are ugly. Would also be nice to have abit more range.

Graham is what he has been for a while and will continue to be.
Inside the 40 he's good, outside he doesn't have the leg
