Triplett - Outside Linebacker Needs

1 Attachment(s)
Mike Triplett discusses Saints need to draft or pick up outside linebacker help this offseason.
Quote:

As I’ve mentioned many times over the past two years – including last week when I broke down the inside linebacker position – the Saints' defense would benefit greatly from a player in the mold of Lavonte David of the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Technically, the Saints could fill that role with an outside linebacker or inside linebacker since they rotate between 4-3 and 3-4 fronts so often.

For instance, Haralson is listed as an outside linebacker and David Hawthorne an inside linebacker. But they’re very similar players who are better against the run than the pass and who have a lot of miles on them. Both are decent assets, but the Saints need to replace at least one of them with an athlete who can cover more ground.

If we go OLB, McKinney would be my choice, I still think ILB would be the way to go. Another poster said in a previous post that he would draft McKinney in the 1st and Perryman in the second although we need a stud NT, it would still be a good move. I also think Powell and Ediboli will get alot of snaps this season. If JR. could cover and contain he would be great and well worth the money.

I'd be happy if he could just contain. His coverage skills leave a lot to be desired.

I believe Mckinney is an ILB. No matter because he was effective all over the defense at State.

Concerns about his coverage ability will drop him to round 2.

Personally, I'm warming up to Dante Fowler as an OLB.

Dante Fowler is a feast/famine guy, takes plays off, I'd rather have nice and steady...

Some good names to know for this draft with regards to traditional 3-4 outside linebacker...

OLB Lorenzo Mauldin, Louisville; 6' 3", 240 lbs
OLB Paul Dawson, TCU; 6' 2", 230 lbs
OLB Zach Hodges, Harvard; 6' 3", 235 lbs
OLB Jake Ryan, Michigan; 6' 3", 235 lbs
OLB Davis Tull, Chattanooga; 6' 3"; 240 lbs

Can any of these guys cover?

Paul Dawson - TCU ... saw a lot of him last year and he has good instincts, can shed blocks and is sound tackler. My concerns would be in pass coverage. This part of his game can use some work and development.

Could be a good fit for 3-4 weak side LB.

Did a mock.
1. OLB Thompson - Instant starter and playmaker.
2. G Cann - BPA and instant starter with the release of Grubbs.
3. WR Coates - All the physical skills. Will explode in a real offense with a real QB throwing him the ball. #1 WR to go with Stills and Cooks.
4. TE Heuerman - BPA. Has all the skills and will do the dirty work freeing up Graham to be the weapon he is.
5. CB Nelson - BPA. Instant starter opposite Lewis. Not a combine guy but knows how to play the position.
6. C Vitabile - Instant starter at center in the 6th. Steal.
7. ILB Hull - BPA. Tackling machine with instincts.

What do you guys think of Mason Foster from the Bucs? He's a FA and he's given Brees fits in coverage. He had some injuries last year but he might be worth taking a look at.

I won't pretend to know more about Fowler than anyone here. Just seems to me like he fits the mold of what we need at that position.

I've been begging for a speedy LB for some time now. I don't give a rat's ass where he comes from. Just get us some young talent that can make some damn plays.
