2014 NFL Draft Grade A Day | New Orleans Saints

2014 NFL Draft Grade A Day | New Orleans Saints

Round 1 - Brandin Cooks WR, Oregon St.
Analysis - Cooks rookie season was cut short by injury but he still made quite the splash. He caught 53 passes in 10 games and scored 4 total touchdowns. He proved to be the electric playmaker the Saints were hoping for.
Score – 4/5
Round 2 - Stanley Jean Baptise CB, NebraskaAnalysis – Jean Baptise was a bust in year one. He appeared in 4 games but disappeared on the stat sheet.
Score – 0/4
Round 4- Khairi Fortt LB, California
Analysis –
Khairi Fortted in his time with the Saints. Now belongs to the Jags.
Score - 0/2
Round 5 - Vinnie Sunseri S, Alabama
Analysis - Sunseri played in 9 games making 5 tackles. I’ve seen worse.
Score – 0/1
Round 5 - Ronald Powell OLB, Florida
Analysis – Powell played in 14 games but had just a couple of tackles.
Score – 0/1
Round 6 - Tavon Rooks OT, Kansas St.
Analysis – Rooks just didn’t get on the field.
Score – 0/0
Undrafted - Kasim Edebali OLB, Boston College
Analysis - Finally the Saints find some production and it comes via an undrafted guy. Edebali played in every single game making 22 tackles, 2 sacks, and forcing a fumble. Well done.
Score – 1/0

I like Cooks but a 1st and 3rd still seems really high, he has the speed to make a difference
Baptiste- seen nothing- to high for a 2nd rounder not seeing any action last season
Sunseri- I think is going to be a 5th round steal- good pick.
Powell- I haven't ruled him out and think he could be solid depth if nothing else.
Ediboli- he's growing. I hope he becomes a monster at OLB. I have hope.
I also like our new KR( his name slips my mind) and Byrds new back-up at FS Warren.
Actual draft-D-
UDFA pick-ups-C+. Anytime we get 2 UDFA that continue to contribute that is a good thing.

Cooks is a good player, great attitude...

But two of Colston's eventual replacements, Kelvin Benjamin and Jordan Matthews could have been selected had we sat tight and we still would have had our third round pick for...

A couple of players we could have selected with that pick...

WR John Brown, AZ (the selection the traded pick was used for had 48 rec, 696 yds, 5 TDs with four of the TD's be an NFL record game winning scores)

RB Jerrick McKinnon, MIN

RB Terrance West, CLE

CB Aaron Colvin, JAX

RB Andre Williams, NYG

NT Justin Ellis, OAK

Used to give the Saints draft team the benefit of the doubt and think they were just aggressive; now, they're frustratingly willy nilly with their valuation of draft picks...

More needs to be done to revise the draft management...

Coulda, woulda, shoulda... Dangerous to play that game. Every team has it's druthers.

For me it goes like this:
A grade: Cooks. Game-changing ability. Sky-high character. Worth the move up.
B grade: Edebali. Solid player with upside. UDFA find is a ++.
B grade: Sunseri. Solid player. Excel at ST. Perfect "role player" on D.
C grade: Powell. Potential. Not sold on it yet though.
F grade: Fortt - total whiff. Rooks - total whiff.

And the "Taco Bell Grade E Meat Award" goes to... The SJB pick.

Even Kanye West would agree on that one!

But when there is a history, pattern and a body of work to review...

It is more than fair to examine, critique...

We have a history of over-reaching and with the exception of Jimmy Graham, and even then he was only taken a few spots from where he was ranked, we tend to reach on way too many picks...

More or less than other teams? Or coaches? Or talent evaluators?

More goes into that than just "The Saints".

Some people on here have mamma's goggle on to believe this draft is better than F. Seriously, if we could trade our entire draft for any other teams draft I would do it in a heartbeat. This draft was reminiscent to the draft when they traded the entire draft for Ricky Williams. Who said history don't repeat itself! Hopefully, Baptiste can get on the field this season to rewrite this draft to at least a "D"

Draft grades should be reserved for 3 years. Typical development/impact curve for new players.

The fact that Fortt and Rooks didn't even make the team is bad. That our 2nd round pick was kept hidden from sight is worse.

Was it the talent scouts? Coaches? Players? We'll find out.

And WTF is mamma's google???

I think F is putting it gently.

I'm glad we shook up the scouting department because it was deserved.

It is in reference to a mother who can't see their child imperfections due to having so much love for that child. Hope the links can better answer your question

I can't see how you can grade someone if they didn't get on the field or seen hardly any playing time. Except for a D or F.

You did say "goggle". I read "google"... my mistake.

Maybe "beer goggles" is more appropriate for this group.

grading anything after round 3 is an "I" in my book unless they are cut that year. 3 years then grade those guys

You gained some major points in admiration to own up a mistake, so I will too cause Cooks could turn out to be a faster and less injury prone Wes walker, Baptiste might turn out to be a better version of Richard Sherman with less mouth and the other draft picks that were let go might turn out to be another Rob ninkovich in 3 years however the sign don't look in those favor the 1st year

Has to be the worst draft in the Payton Era for sure....

Guess the end of times is upon us because I'd have to agree with that statement in part...

However, I think it's important to differentiate between the scouting department accumlating a healthy dBase of players, and...

The appraisal, rating of said players, and...

The decision process, specifically draft management/selection process...

I'd like to know how draft management responsibilities are weighted, assigned amongst the staff...

That's where the harshest criticism, accountability should be addressed...

Because to be fair, we've done exceptionally well with Undrafted Rookie Free Agents since Payton took over...

So to me, the problem is draft management, player valuation not inability to locate talent...

F works for me but this year's draft looks like its about to be another F*** up by the scouts, maybe that's why Ireland was brought on board because this team hasn't drafted worth a damn since 2006

One player was productive...........that alone is worth a C+ but no higher grade than that.

I'm not so sure...

2010 NFL Draft

1(32) Patrick Robinson CB
2(64) Charles Brown OT
3(95) Jimmy Graham TE
4(25) Al Woods DT
5(27) Matt Tennant
6(32) Traded to the Arizona Cardinals
7(32) Sean Canfield QB

or when you look at the investment, return of

2011 NFL Draft
1(24) Cameron Jordan DE
1 (28) Mark Ingram RB (Traded the 2011 Round 2 (56) pick and 2012 Round 1 Pick)
3 (72) Martez Wilson LB (Traded All-Pro OT Jammal Brown AND 2011 R5 (155) for selection of Wilson and a conditional 2012 R6 (Andrew Tiller) which was swapped with Miami in the Reggie Bush Trade)
3 (88) Johnny Patrick CB
7 (226) Greg Romeus DE
7 (243) Nate Bussey LB

The 2011 Draft for me stings the most because we basically traded down, traded away quality for scheiße, and really passed on better quality and better need...

Now there's been enough time passed to judge the draft management of the 2011 NFL draft...

Which I feel was a complete disaster and as having set the Saints back...

Hindsight is not fare, but sure as hell has more clarity...

And it's clear draft management is one of our biggest handicaps...

Holy cow he did say Mamas goggle. I thought it said google too. LOL Either way I totally agree. The comparison to the Ricky Williams draft was also accurate . We'll see if Cooks can outperform Ricky. Thank goodness for Warren and Edibali. I think Edibali may become a true warrior. He seems to have one of those motors that never shuts off.

With the Saints cap problems you can not afford to hit on 1 or 2 guys in the draft which they have done the past 3 years. This year they need to hit on 4 or 5.

Cap is going up and Loomis squeezes blood out of a turnip every offseaon, I wouldn't worry to much but yes it would be nice to have a decent draft again, not a 2006 draft but at least something that lays the foundation for another championship run (3-4 contributors)
