Most of us agree that Mike McKenzie has been a wise addition to our defense, but ugly questions linger regarding what type of money he'll demand this offseason. His stats:

2004 - 11 games, 33 tackles, 0 sack, 5 int, 7 pass def
2003 - 14 games, 57 tackles, 0 sack, 1 frc fum, 4 int (1 TD), 14 pass def
2002 - 13 games, 66 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fum rec, 2 int, 10 pass def
2001 - 16 games, 64 tackles, 0 sack, 2 int, 14 pass def
2000 - 10 games, 32 tackles, 0 sack, 1 int, 5 pass def
1999 - 16 games, 65 tackles, 0 sack, 6 int, 12 pass def

I'm not sure these are "top five" CB numbers, but that's the kind of money he was demanding from the Packers. And it's true that stats don't measure heart and leadership, something our defense desperately needs. But if McKenzie demands top five money, holds out, etc. is he worth the trouble? I know we all want to keep him, but at what point do we refuse to pay up?

It is very hard to judge a CB\'s success by \"stats\" alone. Teams try to avoid the better CB, which we have seen teams do this season since the acquistion of MM. He can take out the #1 receiver and not let him catch anything, which mean he doesnt have to make a tackle. If we wanted a solid tackler, then we could have signed a LB and stick him in coverage. The main reason he IS succesful and helped out defense teams try to focus away from MM, which allows us to cheat to that side, and he can fully take their #1 out of the game. The last 3 games, i beleive the #1 WR or TE, never had over 100yds. But the main point is you cant judge a corner by his \"stats\".

is this all really happening????

I think if I rated the top corners....

1. Champ Bailey
2. Ty Law
3.Charles Woodson
4. Chris Mcalister
5.Patrick Surtain
6.Samari Rolle
7.Mike Mckenzie
8.Sam Madison
9.Aaron Glenn
10. Rhonde Barber

So give em top 7 money

you cant judge mckenzie when he missed training camp and also missed preseason and some regular season games. Too when he got comfortable in the defense he was pretty good and a top corner in the league.

..giving waaay too much credit to McKenzie and not enough credit to the rookie LBs and the added play of Whitehead in the d-line rotation which in turn helped the pass rush. McKenzie is a good player, but he cannot \"shut down\" a #1 WR.

..let\'s you forget 4th and 26...

I heard that he was really upset over Al Harris getting the big contract. He was clearly the best of the Green Bay corners yet he was not paid like it. I think it was more about him getting his feelings hurt.

I have 3 words for anyone in the front office or on this board.......PAY THE MAN!!!!!!! If you don\'t pay McKenzie, we will be right back in the same boat that the Packers were. He\'ll be demanding a trade. The Saints haven\'t seen a corner of his caliber in a long, long time. At least not one that I can remember. If they trade him, it puts us right back into the position we were at before.....looking for a top-notch cornerback. Regardless if we were to go out and draft one, he would still have his rookie growing pains, and leave us with Fahkir Brown, Fred Thomas, and Ashley Ambrose. I don\'t know if I speak for all of you, but I know that\'s not a threesome I\'d be happy to have on the field. McKenzie was a ball-hawk once he got comfortable with the defense. 5 interceptions in a 4-game stretch is nothing to sneeze at, either. Give this guy some props and some money.

People shouldn't be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people.

I was never trying to \"judge\" McKenzie, or even saying I want to get rid of him (I certainly don\'t). I posted the stats as the only concrete evidence by which to consider him, but also added that leadership, heart, etc. can\'t be measured in the stats column.

My question was: what to do with him if he starts the same stuff he put on the Packers. The \"top five\" money demands, hold outs, public team-bashing, etc. I think McKenzie\'s an excellent corner, and I certainly hope he\'s past such antics. At the same time, I don\'t want to see him overpaid only to become another Tebucky Jones.
