Lofton being shopped?

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet · 6m6 minutes ago
The #Saints are shopping LB Curtis Lofton, who had 144 tackles in 2014 and has played in 16 games every year of his career. Unexpected.

Larry Holder ‏@LarryHolder · 3m3 minutes ago
Curtis Lofton has a $9 million cap number for 2015. I'd say I'm surprised by the news of him being "shopped" around.

Didnt see that coming
ILB in the draft or FA?

Interesting.

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Something could happen. Since we'd eat the dead money he'd only cost a team about 2.6 million next year.

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Im guessing coach wants Hawk

Great character,team first

Other options in free agency
*Nate Irving,
Mason Foster
Rolando McClain
Rey Maualuga
Brandon Spikes
David Harris

Hmmm interesting .... lets see where this goes. Yeah the source is a joke but he might finally be right

Wouldn't mind Spikes or Foster

You aren't but look what the Bills got for a guy coming off of ACL injury and potential so lets see what Lofton can fetch? He's a 2 down linebacker and who's to say this is just a way to light some fire under him

Why would you say that  ?

Most GB coaches/fans may argue that AJ's best playing days are behind him.

Alonso is on a rookie deal though and imo if he recovers will be one of the top 5 ILB for a decade

Didnt he want him in the draft?.

Not sure why but my stomachs rumbling and its either me reading coaches mind or my cheese and marmite sandwich repeating in me

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Seems to me like Hawthorne would be the more obvious one to get rid of, which we may still do, but replacing Lofton could be quite a task. A decent draft pick as compensation would be good though provided that we don't blow it on some unheard of borderline draftable O-Lineman like we do every year.

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Wow. I didn't see that coming......I'll bet Lofton didn't either.

Unless.....we talked to him about a restructure and he said no.

Hmmm.........berry berry interesting.(Laugh In reference)

Re: Lofton being shopped?

I'd rather proven commodity over potential when it comes to players that are already in the NFL

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Kiko Alonso in his rookie year played like pro bowl LB. If that trade fails (shady is hot happy at all) I'll go after Kiko (he doesn't want to stay in Buffalo).

I don't think Hawthorne is tradable, he has been a massive let down since he came here.

Lofton at least has some trade weight, no one wants Hawthorne when they notice how many tackles he misses or coverages he blows.

Re: Lofton being shopped?

very dubious & speculative

Lofton will cost us $9 mill if he plays, or $5 mill if he goes
So are we going to find a better player for $4 mill just to break even?

and:
The team could save $2.25 million by converting that to a signing bonus, leaving $7 million against the cap.

That would be my concern as well...if you take the 5 mil hit then that only gives you 4 or less if we are trying to save cap space...and the weakest link is still there in Hawthorne...so then what?

If they are willing to take the cap hit then to me it appears they will draft an ILB, immediate starter on a rookie pay scale.

No way, my guess is they like someone in FA or the Draft. Why replace Lofton with a slower older version? I think they want younger, faster blood at the LB position. Perryman perhaps?

Not sure but it just adds to the needs in the draft. Il

ILB was already a need anyways, Loftons solid but we need people who can cover and tackle.

Re: Lofton being shopped?

We won't get rid of him. It would take a lot like a first rounder

Re: Lofton being shopped?

Yeah but now we need 2 ILB

Im beginning to wonder if we see the team go back to 4-3 in the next couple of years.

We dont have a dominant NT,dont have any great ILB.
I could see Allen pushing a 4-3 similar to the Broncos.

Vic Beasley could be the Von Miller to that defense. If he falls. We're in a weird spot in the draft. We basically get the top 10s leftover pick. Whether that be Beasley, Fowler, Shelton, Shane Ray, etc. I wonder what we'll get for Lofton. Hopefully a 2nd round pick, at least he had a good year.

Seeing Shane Ray falling to us in more and more mocks. Not working out has vaulted others above him

Somethings going on as the team really dont want to touch Brees deal. Strange they are still sitting on converting other bonus's. It ridiculous that tge league hasn't said a word about Junior as the team needs to know as it effects his deal.

An immediate starter doesn't mean he is better or production from the rookie...we suck at drafting LBs...can you imagine what the run defense will look like if we pull this off and the replacement is worse? OMG!!!

We havent drafted a LB higher than the 3rd round. The good ones are usually found between 1-3. Got try sometime, why not now? Maybe we'll get the next Dome Patrol.

Agreed

The Steelers and the Raiders both drafted guys at LB in Ryan Shazier and Kalil Mack, both had pretty good rookie seasons.

Hawk was awful last year... There is a reason why he was cut. He'll make Shanle look good at this point in his career.

Benson doesn't have the free money laying around.

The litigation Benson is going through is costing him too much. Loomis was free in the past to spend what he wanted but the reluctance to restructure contracts this year tells me there are financial issues.

We'd eat the bonus money. He'd be 1/2 the price to other teams.

I doubt the cost of that litigation amounts to anything more than the cost of a couple UDFA's.

That's absurd. Did you see the Picayune today? Benson is worth $1.9 BILLION per Forbes magazine. That's billion, with a "B." The money Benson spends on litigation is completely unrelated to the Saints payroll. Besides, the Saints payroll is capped by the league anyway....he can only spend so much, no matter what. That's called a "salary cap" -- ever heard the term? Are you aware the lawsuit is only about 60% of the Saints, which are in the trust. You don't know much about finance, if you think it is affecting Loomis and the actual team in any way. The 2015 money is set and capped and already accounted for, no matter what happens in court.

I like the move, it isn't that he isn't good, but he can't cover against the pass, so...

If it is true I am guessing there has been a conversation with Ryan & Allen. Don't worry there is a plan.
