New Orleans Saints salary cap: Flurry of moves offers breathing room as deadline nears

1 Attachment(s)
With several hours to spare before Tuesday afternoon's deadline, the New Orleans Saints sliced their way to salary cap compliance -- unofficially at least.

The latest NOLA.com estimate gives the Saints $2.39 million in breathing room. That total doesn't include the pay cut accepted by veteran receiver Marques Colston. Nor does it include possible contract alterations -- or even outright releases -- for linebacker David Hawthorne and offensive linemen Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs.

On Monday the Saints released veteran linebacker Curtis Lofton, freeing up $4.25 million in cap space. The team also converted edge rusher Junior Galette's roster bonus into a signing bonus, freeing up $10 million for 2015.

See the detailed salary cap numbers here for each player

Good moves so far. Need to cut Hawthorne and restructure grubbs or evans.

I don't like the fact Brees hasn't been extended. To me that means this will be his last contract with the Saints.

Be careful with this wish to cut Hawthorne, soon the team may find itself with more holes than they can effectively fill...

I wouldn't be too sure about that. LB has been a thorn in the side of the D for far too long. Time to get younger & faster at the position

So you would be willing to possibly go into the draft with no starting ILB's? Hawthorne at the least adds depth.

Is he? Or is it sleight of hand?
