So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

I have to say I am more excited than I have been in several years. Im not saying championship or even playoffs, but this team will be interesting to watch.

Looks like we will have a completely new identity. Pre season and camp will be very interesting with the backup QB battle and all the DBs. It is going to be exciting to see Ingram as a full time back. It may be like getting to know a whole new team. Im sure our offense will still be tops but I bet we are way more balanced with the run. Our defense really couldnt be much worse than last year so that is something we can look forward to seeing.

Im stoked! Love the draft so far.

I'm really excited for our new OLB Hauoli the more tape I watch on him from (Danny Shelton) highlight videos the more I see how he played a HUGE role in helping him get that 1st round selection. Same thing goes for Stephone Anthony with Vic Beasley videos. I grant you this is how the saints became high on these guys. We got some great puzzle peices.

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

I am just as stumped as ever.

some i really like,

Stephone Anthony can he be the three down ILB we have been missing since Vilma left. sure a reach but time will tell. not a bad gamble IMO

P.J. Williams got drafted about where i thought he should but i did not expect it one bit. can he keep his head on straight? but the skills are there

then there is the wait to see

Andrus Peat i see the upside and i had him going to the Giants. He fit their blocking scheme much more than he fits ours. True LT is a curious pick with Armstead here. how will this will work out down the road? But He needs work and needs to get a bit nasty. He might be spot duty and Injury replacement player that replaces Harris this year and that is it. I have trouble seeing him as a starter till he learns to handle speed

and then there are the annual IR dice rolls that have not worked out for us at all. Drew can not cover up how bad these moves have been. These really kill my mood. If the IR tags were not what they are i would be pumped

Hau'oli Kikaha - none stop motor and a great locker room guy but those sack totals are against spread offense they run out west.

Garrett Grayson - skills are there. mind is there but fragile. this kid needs to become friends with the trainers big time.

Well lets see what happens on day three. 3 picks and pray to good they are still with the team by seasons end.

So far staying away from the Kool Aid is really easy for me

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

Not real happy with the draft. Looks like a typical B draft for the Saints again, which I'm starting to get really tired of. First, we have starting tackles. The OT we pick in this draft, and I do think we need to draft one, should have come either in last pick of the 3rd round, or the 5th round. I like that they tried to trade up for Schreff, and would have been THRILLED if that would have happened, when it didn't it seemed like the Saints got mad and just picked an OT at random, but let's not dwell on that right now. With your first round pick, or picks, you MUST draft impact playmakers. What did we do? We at best, drafted a back up OT, at worst created a rift on the team between the incumbent LT, and the new guy. Don't see how that helps the locker room.
Now, with our 2nd first round pick, we got a keeper. We haven't had even decent LB's on this team since the Dome Patrol years. I think Stephon Anthony changes all that now. I think this guy will be a game changing playmaker on the inside of our defense, and paired with Galette and kiakaha, our second round pick, I think we finally have the beginnings of a very good LB corps with 3 legitimate game changing playmakers. It will be very exciting to see how these guys come together this year.
Moving on to our 3rd round picks, my disappointment in this draft, and what strengthens my comment about this being another typical boring B grade draft, we pick Garette Grayson. Sounds more like a comic book character than the supposed successor to one of the most impressive QB's in NFL history and a futureHall of Famer. Looking at some of his tape, he looks more like a bad Drew Bree's, or Drew on one of his multiple INT games. Wasted pick as far as I'm concerned. What happened with Ryan Griffin anyway? Still, I don't have a problem if the Saints feel like they need someone else to replace Drew in a few years, I would have preferred them to take Bryce Petty. We need a more physically gifted QB, not an attempt to replace Drew with a clone. When Drew hangs em up, it will be time to move on and try to get even better.
P.J. Williams is one of the bad boys in this draft. If we passed on Ray and Gregory and others in this draft to make a point of drafting quality character players, then why draft this guy who will not have as much impact on this team as the aforementioned players. A real head scratcher to say the least. SP and ML said they wanted players that could start immediately, then proceed to contradict those statements. From what I see, we did very well with the LB picks, and wasted the other 3, making this the B draft that we usually get from these guys, not the "CROSSROADS" draft that we needed. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

Peat, Great player but I don't see the purpose of drafting unless they plan to trade or release our current OT; +B /I am clueless what the plans are with 3 OT starters

Anthony, perfect pick +A /starter immediately

Kikaha, perfect pick, yeah he run a 4.9 but how fast can a qb run backwards +A / will be in rotation game one then start the rest

GG, lots of talent and potential but why use the 75 pick here when you have been molding Ryan Griffin to be the successor? B /hopefully will be trade bait in 2 years

P.J. Absolute steal, +A /will not start but will challenge for the nickel position

dizzle88 05-02-2015 03:19 AM

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

The Peat pick confused me because our tackles our fine, its the guard spot that is a little in question.

I like the other 3 picks but I think we needed a WR more than a corner

Currently we have

Colston - looks to be on his last legs
Cooks - going to be good
Toon - played well at the end of the season
Morgan - very inconsistent and maturity issues
Coleman - drops everything
Jones - could be decent but completely unknown at the minute.

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

Andrus Peat - Strief is 33 when the season starts and can be released after this year saving 4 million cap... Bryce Harris was the backup incase of injury

Stephone Anthony - Immediate starter;

Kikawoowah() - Just finds a way to get to the QB, led the nation with 19 sacks last season

Grayson - Drew has two years left on his contract, and is getting old. Better to try and get a legitimate replacement a couple of years earlier than be stuck like the Buccaneers are gambling on Winston

Williams - Should have went a lot earlier than the third and will see the field in the nickel...

I think the draft has went rather well and I see 4 players who will see significant playing time next year...

Our first three picks will be playing this season for sure. Garrett will wait for Drew and PJ will play behind Lewis and Browner. I give our draft an A- so far.

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

We got O-line help with the best OT in the draft. He will be starting at RT before the season is over.

We drafted arguably the top ILB in the draft. Fast, violent, smart, leader. This may end up being our best pick on defense in the Payton era.

We drafted arguably the best pure pass rusher in the draft. He's played 2 seasons after his knee injuries. I think he's OK.

PJ Williams: Compares to Charles Tillman. Nuff said.

The only pick I didn't like was Grayson, but I understand why we picked him. I just think Drew still has 3 to 5 solid years left. I don't hate the pick, I just didn't love it.

I give the draft an A.

No headscratchers. Everyone is football smart, non-stop motors, lots of upside, high character, leader types.

I think I see a pattern here.

I just call it as I see it. I really haven't felt it or haven't been excited for the past several off seasons. I like what I see and do have a good feeling. Again I am not ready to pronounce us playoff bound, but it will be exciting watching this new team gel. This could be the most physical team we have seen under Payton.

I'm honestly not overly excited or disappointed. I'm just waiting patiently to see how everything unfolds. Looks like we got a bunch of good, solid football players and that filled a bunch of needs on our team.

the pick that I really am ticked about is the 5th for Swann. traded back in and i was expecting Charles Gains to be the reason. Gains was taken in the 6th by the browns after what was our pick.

so i am watching Gains vs Swann closely.

I do not see it. betting I wont either,

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

Didn't understand the move for Swann either, and there was other value there at other positions...

Only thing I can figure was that Ireland had been holding it since Thursday and Sean and Mickey went crazy during Jeff's bathroom break...

FinSaint 05-02-2015 08:16 PM

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

Payton about Swann:

- Played multiple positions at their defense.

- He's been under a couple of different defensive coordinator with whom the Saints have a "pretty good relationship."

- Highly recruited DB coming out of high school.

- See him as a CB who can compete for the nickel as well.

- Really like his football instincts.

I guess it's just a matter of them seeing him as a guy who can fit into their plan... they had a high grade on him going into the draft.

jeanpierre 05-02-2015 08:26 PM

Re: So how excited are you about next season with the moves so far this offseason?

I'm fine with the Andrus Peat pick; not thrilled, it makes sense; just real disappointed we were that close to a talent like Vic Beasley and didn't package our pick 13 and either a future pick or a current player (i.e. Galette, Vaccaro or even Jordan) to move up and get Beasley; but the selection of Peat allows us to move Armstead to the more athletic need of Right Tackle where we'll see a huge improvement of run plays and screens on that side of the ball despite solid, mostly mistake-free football from Strief; plus when Armstead's contract comes due, it won't cost as much to re-sign him as a right tackle...

Totally pumped about the Anthony pick; I've mocked him for a long time at 31 for us despite the reach; but like I said then, unless we could trade back two, three spots into the second round, Anthony wasn't going to be there when we picked in the second - so it was the right pick for us...

The Saints fan in me is being positive for the Hau'oli Kikaha selection; but I question his athleticism with a second round pick and big defensive ends like Henry Anderson and Carl Davis were still there and I DON'T want to commit the money that Cam Jordan is asking; hopefully we'll hear plenty of Clint Eastwood Western sounding Ki-ka-koww sounds when he makes sacks in the Dome, if we don't lose a first for it...

Third Round, Drew has one, maybe two more good years left; people can get p/o all they want, but the guy's arm is not what it was REBUILT to do and we can't keep committing that amount of money of the cap and have quality stars to balance the roster, Grayson was an ideal pick, but I'd rather have waited and taking value at another position of need; but my wishful thinking as a Saints fan keeps saying - Montana was taken in the third round...

P.J. Williams was a late first, early second round that fell to us because of his judgement; so now we get a talented CB, who had three INT's and won the MVP in a National Championship Game - that's great production for a third round pick...

Can't believe we couldn't move Raphael Bush for at least a fourth round pick with all the depth we have at safety and the great talent that was still there in that round...

Well, the Saints have discovered something in the fifth round again; keep saying that we stole Davis Tull, stole him you hear! And if that didn't make my day, totally missed Tyeler Davison was still out there and got a buckstrong defensive tackle/end behind Akiem Hicks; but the Saints did it again and moved back up for a head scratcher for a pedestrian CB in Swann...

Nothing in the sixth for the Swann move..

RB Marcus Murphy is your Khiry Robinson/Pierre Thomas type of RB; but would he have been there as a FA and could we have taken a big NT or TE??!

Grade the draft a "B"...

This was essentially a rookie draft again for the new three headed front office with Jeff Ireland now in the mix...

I am super excited, not because I expect all of these guys to come in and start or make an impact this year because I don't, but because we have a ton of competition and competition brings out the best in players.

I expect Williams to hold down Nickel for us and he could end up starting by seasons end. I think Anthony starts for us.

Our 5th round DT will get some playing time and will make an impact.

Not too mention, it was a solid draft! Talented, non flashy over-hyped "projects", strong leader and character players too

Not flashy but very solid. The players you can build on.

We only have three TE on the roster and one is Orson Charles.
I love Ben Watson but his injury history is a little worrying.
Depending on what he is looking for i think Jermaine Gresham might be worth a look. Still on 26,good blocker, decent reciver.

Either that or Zach Miller. I think we stay as is though

I'm thinking the trade for Unger is the best... Unger is killing two birds with one stone, protecting Drew plus better runs up the middle.

Not too mention, we got one hell of a mike linebacker with the extra first :bng:
