Galette injured, could require surgery

1 Attachment(s)
Saints RE Junior Galette is dealing with a pectoral injury, and could require surgery.

Galette suffered the injury "recently." If he undergoes surgery for a torn pec, he'd be sidelined in the neighborhood of 5-6 months. That means he would likely begin the year on the reserve/PUP list, missing a minimum of six games, and potentially many more. Galette's 10 sacks led the Saints last season.

Damn.

OK. More playing time for Edebali and other young guys. Liked what I saw last season from him. Underrated athleticism and non stop motor.

This is why it is so important to be deep at certain positions. This sh!t happens every year in the NFL. Last year it was acl's. It really is next man up now. He will miss half the season. I hope we have a true DE ready to go game 1.

Hey, its part of the game. Somebody has to step up.

Waaaaay too early to make a call here.

Depending on the severity Galette could be back in the preseason.

If in fact Junior is out for a while, this presents a huge opportunity for Kikaha, Powell & Edebali. Our front office prepared and drafted well.

As another poster stated earlier, next man up.

Re: Galette injured, could require surgery

i knock Jr but as a pass rusher he is the best speed we have of the edge. all the others are not near as fast. I was hoping to see him get off the feild more and stay rested for passing downs.

Well rush defense should improve. pass rush will be more of a colllapse the pocket and containment i guess.

this means the front 3 must step up. NT play looms larger than ever now. must get a solid push up the middle and take away the ability to step up in the pocket.

dam there goes the rotation.

the fact that he is 'considering surgery' is a good sign, and that he might be able to play through it

Dammit. Why does news always have to be bad news.

Let's hope no more starters go down before the season begins.

We have Parys Haralson, Hau'oli Kikaha, Ronald Powell, Anthony Spencer, Kasim Edebali, Davis Tull...

We're gonna be okay...

Spencer is probably past his prime. None of the others have proven to be competent pass rushers in the NFL.

Galette has been our most consistent pass rusher the past 2 seasons. Heck in 2014 he was number 2 in the whole league in QB hurries in addition to his 10 sacks.

If he can't go full speed, it will be a big loss.

Re: Galette injured, could require surgery

While I absolutely hope that it doesn't turn out to be serious, I do feel much more comfortable with our depth and options at the position than I ever have. I get what you're saying commish and I can't disagree with you. But I do think Spencer can log some quality snaps as part of a rotation. He plays the run well, and even if he isn't a great pass rusher anymore I still believe he can make an impact in spot duty. I also believe that Kikaha is going to end up being a better player than most people expect. 40 times mean less and less the closer you get to the line. The guy has burst and quickness in short area, good power for his size, high motor, relentless, good hands, good moves... the list reads like a football fan's wet dream. Without the injuries, I think he would have been a sure 1st round pick. And personally, the injuries don't really worry me very much. Significant advances have been made in both the repair and the rehab of ACL tears, he appears to be walking proof of that.. I've gone off track a bit, so I guess what I'm trying to say is.. hoping for the best. It would hurt the rotation if he goes down. But I do think we'll be OK with the next men up.

Re: Galette injured, could require surgery

Not that I don't appreciate quarterback hurries, c'mon folks, it's not sacks, sack-forced fumbles...

We've got a fairly good stockpile of OLBs that, at the very least, should form a formidable rotation of fresh pass rushers...

Hell, this could be a blessing of sorts in disguise; to rotate and give teammates opportunities to step up...

Re: Galette injured, could require surgery

We can certainly use his talents, but his absence won't determine our defensive success or failure.

We have several new players to fill the pass rush only role.

I will never understand how anyone could think that losing Galette for any amount of time would be ok. He's the only proven pass rusher that we have but he gets dumped on so much for some reason. People didn't like that he talked junk on Twitter but he at least showed up on Sunday's. Cameron Jordan is soft as hell and Tweets like a 14 year old girl but that never bothered anyone. Losing Galette will be seriously detrimental.

How many of them have some success in the NFL rushing the passer? Anthony Spencer... That's it. So we go from finally having some good depth to rotate in with Galette to being right back where we started: One pass rusher and nothing proven to back Spencer up.

Rotoworld:
Doctors who have examined Saints OLB Junior Galette's injured pectoral are reportedly "split" on whether Galette needs surgery.
RapSheet reports it'll likely be "a week or so" before a determination is made because the final doctor who needs to examine Galette is currently on vacation. It sounds like Galette is dealing with at least a partial tear of his pectoral. If Galette needs surgery, he'll miss a huge chunk of the 2015 season. Jun 5 - 1:33 PM

QB hurries are sometimes better than sacks. They many times result in BIG mistakes, like INTs. Lets not downgrade the effects of QB hurries. I wonder what effect being hurried had on Drew Brees last season? See what I mean?

#1 & #2 in sacks last year - Justin Houston & JJ Watt

#1, 2, 3 in QB Hurries? Watt, Galette, Houston.

No its not exactly sacks but it's damn close.

I agree. Losing Galette is not good, but he can't stop the run and won't set the edge. He's about as mature as a 2y/o. That is why he gets dumped on and rightly so. As for Jordan there's nothing soft about him. And just what the hell does that mean, 'Tweets like a 14 year old girl." I suppose you'd rather he be like Galette and tweet like a jackass.

Commish, did you see interceptions with this team last year?!?

They were about as common as sightings of Hillary Clinton's private email server...

Close only counts in handgrenades; sacks, finishing/terminating the offense play and sack/forced fumbles, all-around play - that's what we should be paying big contracts...

Not saying I'm glad the guy is hurt, but we've got plenty of guys who can step up and finish plays...

As well as set the edge...

And I bet we see it this season...

I'm glad we've got depth at that position to counter this.

Wasn't galette facing a suspension for the start of the season?

No its not exactly sacks but it's damn close.

this is the huge impact his loss will create. Last year he was getting pressure but all QBs did was step up in the pocket and move to their left underneath his speed rush to the outside.

No pressure up the middle from the nose tackle. no pocket containment or collapse from the DE position. could not blitz LB because the secondary was getting toasted all over the field. worried about coverage everyone at the second level was a step or two behind in reacting. missed tackles? that a mental and a desire mistake in my book.

That was the issue. defense did not perform like a unit. it look like a three legged dog chasing its tale all year long. even when everyone was healthy

lets face facts. the blown drafts on defense have left the saints with a poor rotation of the front 7. this year it appears we might have a solid beginning to a rotation. more are needed. DE is a huge ????

Jr still is not a three down LB IMO but he is a great OLB for passing downs to force a QB up into the pocket were the DL is suppose to benefit in sacks from the hurries. he is on the field way to much and over used.

Real question now is Cam ready to step up and lead this DL as a veteran leader or not? He must take over Smith role. LB has enough veterans that i hope someone steps into that role back there. secondary is loaded with head cases so i feel that will not be an issue.
