Judge finds Tom Benson competent to run Saints, Pelicans

Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson will remain in control of the teams and his billion-dollar fortune after a New Orleans judge on Thursday (June 18) found the 87-year-old capable of managing his own affairs, blocking his estranged heirs' attempt to take over.

Orleans Civil District Judge Kern Reese ruled Benson competent after an eight-day trial that ended last week.

His daughter Renee Benson and grandchildren Rita and Ryan LeBlanc had asked the judge to declare the patriarch incompetent, arguing the octogenarian is in mental decline and is being unduly influenced by his wife and an inner circle of team executives.

But for now, Benson will stay in control of his estimated $1.7 billion fortune, built over decades on car dealerships, real estate and banking deals in New Orleans and San Antonio.

Good news for Tom, and probably both teams, but, I highly doubt this is over.

So you guys think a woman with merely 10 years of ties to Tom and the Saints is so much better for us than Tom's immediate family, one of which was being grommed to take over when Tom retires or passes?

To some people, Gayle Benson is a sweet, kindly person and caring wife. To others, she has a tawdry past filled with legal problems from her interior decorator career and now is a manipulator of her husband, San Antonio and New Orleans billionaire Tom Benson, vigorously guarding access to him and taking advantage of his advancing age for her own gains.

Gayle Benson’s past — dirty, clean or otherwise — is coming into the sunshine.

Noting that Tom Benson has not appeared in court proceedings in either San Antonio or New Orleans regarding his estate, Randall Smith, Renee Benson’s lead New Orleans lawyer, said, “His wife will not allow it.”

Gayle “approached Tom Benson, ostensibly to solicit funds from him for a charity. The two started dating shortly thereafter,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit text goes on to state that Gayle Benson “has never owned, operated or managed a substantial business enterprise and has not received any formal training on how to do so.”

The lawsuit then introduces two eye-openers.

“She and her businesses have been sued multiple times.”

Based “upon information and belief, prior to meeting Tom Benson, Gayle was in significant debt and had limited credit.”

I'm much more afraid of Gayle taking over than I am of Renee, Rita and Ryan.

I don't view this as a good decision at all.
