Brees was replaced with Doug Flute in 03

Did anyone know this:

In 2003, Flutie replaced a struggling Brees when the Chargers were 1–7. The 41-year-old Flutie became the oldest player to score two rushing touchdowns in a game, the first player over 40 to accomplish that feat. He also became the oldest AFC Offensive Player of the Week, winning the award for the fourth time. On January 2, 2005, the season finale of the 2004 season, Flutie broke Jerry Rice's record set two weeks prior, to become the oldest player ever to score a touchdown, at the age 42 years and 71 days. Rice was 42 years and 67 days when he made his touchdown. Flutie's record as a starter that year was 2–3. Flutie was released from the Chargers on March 13, 2005.

I don't even remember this event. I remember Ditka trying to get him for the Saints at one point but it failed.

Did not know that ... remember the "Hail Mary", the CFL & the Buffalo Bills with Flutie but not much else ... that's a pretty good conversation piece at parties (for Flutie), "Yeah, I had to come in the game to replace Drew Brees once ... ", :D.

Flutie was a good mentor for Brees, as he even admits in his autobiography.

Flutie is a player that deserves to be in the Pro-Football Hall of Fame (note... pro-football... not just NFL).

Never understood the knock on short QB's. They can absolutely get it done but their mechanics are somewhat different. If you watch Flute, a lot of times he was throwing with both feet off the ground...totally goes against the current methodology. Hell, we had a QB in H.S. who was maybe 5'3", guy was good and he never complained about not being able to see.

Brees wasn't all that good in the beginning of his career. In fact he struggled enough for the Chargers to draft Phillip Rivers to replace him. The shoulder injury forced the team to part with him earlier than they wanted.

Drew became Drew when he met Payton. Drew had to start slow with the system because of the restrictions with his surgically repaired shoulder. Payton slowly worked more into each weeks game plan to help Drew build confidence and strength. I believe it took Payton's vision and leadership to bring out the greatness in him.

Brees played on some good teams in San Diego. Problem was the coach didn't know how to use him. Plus he had no one to throw ball to at the WR position. Thank God they didn't think much of him.

Sometimes it just doesn't work out with one team.

I was stuck on a bus with Joe Theisman a couple of weeks ago and he is about 5'9" or 5'10" and they never talk about him being short when this topic comes up.

Terry Bradshaw (4 - 0 Super Bowl Record) was replaced by Joe Gillaim at the start of the first 6 games of the 1974 season.
