Deuce primed for huge payday - August 04
While the Saints have been floating numbers to Deuce McAllister and his agent since before the 2004 season, contract extensions are now underway in earnest to get the Saints' best offensive player locked into a long-term deal.

New Orleans Pro Football has learned from sources that the Saints formally offered a long-term contract proposal that resembled the extension Kansas City star Priest Holmes received last offseason, with guaranteed money in excess of $10 million.

McAllister and his agent Ben Dogra turned down the offer. The biggest issue - as is commonly the case - guaranteed money. The two sides began talking seriously after the season ended.

Dogra is probably not looking to Kansas City for a framework for a new contract, but to San Diego, Washington and Indianapolis. Chargers runningback LaDainian Tomlinson received a monster contract last offseason, weeks after Washington runningback Clinton Portis. Colts runningback Edgerrin James is a free agent and is up for a long-term deal of his own, unless he is slapped with the franchise tag.

Still operating under his rookie contract that he signed after he was drafted 23rd overall in the 2001 draft, McAllister is slated to receive $550,000 in base salary. Even the Saints can admit that is not in line with McAllister's production.

In addition to McAllister, this offseason the Saints will be talking big money deals with DE Darren Howard, CB Mike McKenzie and possibly WR Joe Horn.
I wonder if Deuce might hold out for a prolong period of time.

And is Deuce worth top 5 money?

Pros: Deuce plays with a lot of heart and puts up good yardage.

Cons: Deuce is one of the worst backs in the NFL when it comes to TD/fumble ratio. Of all the top backs, only Tiki Barber is worse.

I'm thinking Deuce is in the top 10 but not top 5. This should be interesting.

Maybe they should trade him away?

He\'s good and all..but I\'m more of a Team fan more that a Players fan...and you have to put the team first...

I can\'t see giving him Tomlinson like money..no way...

More and more I wish the whole salary issue was strictly a performance based thing...

All Rookies should be signed to a set amount of money for a 2 year contract..then the team could resign..or whatever only after the original contract expires.....and if they get signed...then you make the league minimum..with incentives....then get paid AFTER the season..based on what you do..You know the concept..we all adhere to it in our jobs...if we do well..we get raises..and we get paid based on the kind of production we display...in hard numbers..none of this potential hogwash...

could you imagine the sort of hunger to win this would instill in these modern day players?

not to mention..the coaches..and owners..

it would bring grit back to football..and..it would bring individual accountability back...

It would be AWESOME

but..yeah let me get back to reality....If Deuce can\'t be more of a team player..and continually insists on top 3 or 5 money..he needs to be considered for a trade...don\'t get me wrong..he needs a raise...but not top 5 ..we just have too many needs... as harsh as that view is..it\'s just plain and simple facts..if we give him top 5 money..forget about signing any big free agents... or even many middle of the road kinda guys...He will be our Offense...

this is a critical decision for the franchise. i hope no one here clings to the term saint-for-life or you end up with eddie georges that cannot hit 3.5 ypc anymore. the lifespan for rbs is getting shorter n shorter. with the injuries and slowing i dunno if deuce is worth tomlinson kind of commitment. heaven forbid i know he the saintliest of saints but it takes vision, discipline, and commitment to win in the cap world. (see the article just posted). before over the top money i would take one of the top 3 rbs in the draft via trade, via oakland for example, plus a second and a first next year. that said, i am only FOR deuce BUT only if at the right price.

what you dont do is trade mccalister.... if they would play him right (with carney in front blocking for him) he is freaking awesome... there is not a better back out there for us.... what you DO is ship AB and his 6 mill a year salary and get someone decent with lower pay (anyone is better than him) duece played for peanuts the last few years and earned his money..... if they get rid of him i will have no more reason to watch the saints... we get rid of heart and keep people who dont really care... unload sullivan, he should be in breech of his contract since he is out of football shape and was inactive and it was not due to injury....

there are guys they can un;load to keep deuce....but watch them stay par with what they do by keeping sullivan and brooks and shipping out deuce....

...you forgot Priest Holmes, Ahman Green, and Chris brown, but that was taking into account this past season. I guess if I have time later, I can factor in past four.

Ok, I wanted the link cuz I was a bit confused as to the date of the article. What was posted seemed to be an article from Aug. \'04.

Now I see it is recent. My opinion is that Deuce isn\'t worth a huge mega contract based solely on what he has done to date. However, if there was ever a player on this Team that was worth a risk, it\'s Deuce. Conditioning iissues are the only worries I have for him and I think that it\'s being overblown by some as to how bad his shape was this season.

Deuce hasn\'t quite had the seasons Tomlinson or Portis have had so maybe he shouldn\'t get quite that much money. But in my estimation he is worth as much to us as either of those two RBs and should be paid as being such.
