No joke: Haslett under gag order
Thursday, February 03, 2005
BY KIMBERLY JONES
Star-Ledger Staff
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A strange off-season is under way in New Orleans, where owner Tom Benson has decreed that the organization will speak with one voice until training camp opens. The voice? That of GM Mickey Loomis. So, where does that leave coach Jim Haslett? Mum, apparently. Look for the policy to change, or at least loosen, at some point. But, for now, the usually colorful Haslett has been muzzled. He'll be requested for media interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine in three weeks. We'll see if the gag order remains. ...

Redskins CB Fred Smoot appears likely to hit the open market March 2 as a free agent. Smoot's agent is continuing talks with the Redskins but has turned down a $10 million signing bonus. He wants $14 million up front and, as probably the best corner available, he just might get it. ... Meanwhile, Washington is trying to unload WR Rod Gardner for a second-round pick. The Buccaneers, who have 11 draft picks, would be a willing trade partner if the price comes down a couple of rounds. ...

Contrary to last week's Senior Bowl sentiment that QB Kurt Warner will wind up in Chicago, there comes a dissenting opinion this week. Seems coach Lovie Smith might be all-too-aware of Warner's current limitations, having seen them up close with the Rams before both men left St. Louis. The feeling is that if Smith were ever going to bring Warner to the Bears, he would have done it a year ago.

You\'ve really gotta wonder what the hell is going on.

I\'ve NEVER even heard of this type of thing.

The coach can\'t speak until training camp?

Give me a break............ :exclam: :exclam:

Winning starts at the top. Unfortunately, that\'s where Benson is at.

I think we\'ve got problems. Then again.........what do I know..

Benson will eventfully run Haslett out out town if he doesn\'t stop the non-sense.
He\'s gone about all wrong in running his team it seems

do you honestly expect someone who is more worried about the money he makes rather than the product of what he puts on the field to produce anything worthwhile... benson sees everything, and i mean everything in terms of money... that is his problem.... where other owners would pay top dollar for top free agents, benson conserves his money, nickel-and-diming his way through free agency year in and year out...

loomis isn\'t in his position b/c he\'s good... no, he\'s going with benson\'s flow, which is to not shell out mega money in the offseason, try to make what we have (not much) work without spending a lot... very sad, and as long as that continues, we\'ll never have a team.... i would love, i mean love to see the city buy the team like green bay did... i would pay the extra tax, which would amount to maybe $1000-2000 per year for me in my tax bracket...

I used to work at a Grocery store...the company was a rather decent sized chain..with several stores in the Texas/ New Mexico area...

Anyway...We employees had been hearing rumors of the company , and the state they were in financially...and consiquently..fearded for our jobs...

Many were asking Corporate HQ if we were going to shut down..it wasn\'t just our store in question..all of them..

Corporate assured us..we were in no way going to shut down..and that we were strong..and the worries we felt were unsubstantiated..and we should just focus on our jobs...

Some people I guess bought it...not I...

As the months rolled along..Corporate wouldn\'t say much of anything to anyone..and soon..we found Security from Corporate offices..were coming in..inspecting the stores...

I knew what was happening..So ..I left..and got a new job..before the flood of jobless people beat me to the punch..

Sure enough...one day..the employees went to work...like any other day..but..they weren\'t allowed to clock in just yet..a meeting was scheduled..a suprise meeting..and..they were told..the company was allready shut down..and they no longer had jobs...

Pretty sorry if you ask me..

I see some of those same patterns bieng displayed by this Owner...

The calm before the storm , if you will,...

I know again..like before..what\'s happening here...

I will continue to hope..though I fear..this is the one clue..noone can deny...I am sure many others have seen this sort of thing before as well..9 times out of 10..it means..the place is going under...

Infact..I can\'t think of one single instance..where it lead to something other than that...

I mean..come on..How many owners tell thier..\'\'Coach\'\' they cannot discuss the team..or it\'s progress...in any way...

Do you think L.A. will keep the franchise name?...

... I do not understand why people think this way...

.. . don\'t you think the team would make much, much more money if they would win?

.. If I have a football team, and money is my main interest, I want that team in the playoffs and the SB constantly, because that makes much much much more money that my team going 8-8 every freaking year... more nationally televised games, more prime time games (MNF), which means more advertizing sales, more jersey and hat sales, etc...

...and now people are concerned about Haslett being run out of town... please! y\'all make it sound like a bad thing..

...and.. the Saints have the highest or second highest payroll in the league... talk about a penny pincher...

... and, you want to see an owner paying top dollar every year for free agents? Become a Redskins fan... oh yeah, they have been doing that for what 5 years now?... and how many winning seasons is that? yeah, none...maybe the next couple fo years with Gibbs...

'Cause the simple man pays the thrills, the bills and the pills that kill

After Green Bay bought the Packers the NFL pass a rules that state no city or state can buy a NFL team, I\'m not 100% sure how this rule applies but I heard that is was a rule, if not for the that the state would have been better off buying the team instead of ging Benson the almost 300 mill.,
