...his 2004 Mercedes in on a Lexus. (maybe a sign there) LOL. sorry, i couldn't help it.

do have a howard related post tho...

The Saints want to bring Darren Howard back, but they're not sure how to use him if he re-signs. Howard enjoyed his best season as a pro after shaking off early-season injuries to his neck and knee. The Saints enjoyed remarkable success with their four-end alignment in passing situations. In that scheme, coordinator Rick Venturi moved Howard inside to tackle, alongside 6-6 Tony Bryant, and inserted rookie rush specialist Will Smith at left end. That group featured four pass rushers on the field at the same time and created major protection problems for opposing lines. If Howard doesn't return, the Saints will probably be forced to use veteran Willie Whitehead inside. While Whitehead plays with a high motor and can make plays with his non-stop hustle, he's not nearly the pass rush talent that Howard is.

why keep an unhappy player that will cost a lot and won\'t play as much? he\'s got good trad potential to bring in some quality needs.

Howard\'s name comes up often in trade discussions.

Now that we have Will Smith I think this is a viable option.

Although, having 3 great pass rushers is not a bad thing... Do we need all 3-of them and do we need that much $$ tied up at the defensive end position?

I think if there\'s a \"need\" position that we could fill and Howard was part of the equasion that brought that player here, it would be a WISE move.

But, how much is Howard worth. I think he\'s got pretty good trade value considering a lot of teams need a DE who can apply pressure.

I look for Howard to get traded because it just makes too much sense.

But, that\'s not always the case when it comes to the Saints. I mean, Venturi is still here ain\'t he?

i was reading earlier right after the season that they can put some form of tag on him ( and dont wuote me but it might be restricted free agent) and then if he is picked up we would get compensation through draft picks. philly has made a living off of that. so that may be an avenue they take also. i dont think we can afford to keep him, but man it would be nice to have three guys on the field on passing downs like that

It\'d be nice if we could swap Howard for a better than decent DT.

Lately, I\'ve seen a lot of trade Howard posts in this forum. I am not sure the guy has much trade value. In order to trade him, the Saints will need to sign him. Okay, put the franchise tag on him. Now you have a guy making 7 or 8 mil on a one year contract. What team could pull off a trade with that kind of salary cap number? Okay, now sign the guy to a 3 to 5 year contract with a nice signing bonus. If the Saints were then to trade him, the Saints cap becomes an issue. Another issue, if Howard would sign a 3 to 5 year deal with the Saints, then why trade a great player? Now, the sign and trade thing, they will probably have to franchise him and hope the other team can come to terms on a long term contract. Then you risk the deal not getting done, blowing up your cap, then having to still deal with McAllister, Horn, and McKenzie.

Perhaps, I am over complicating things. I do think the only option is to let him walk and test free agency. If we get him back, then fine. If not, then good knowing you. I really do not see a trade working out at all, IMHO.

Letting him walk would be the worst thing we could do.

I think your missing a valuable aspect of the franchise tag. If we tagged him, we could still seek trade partners. If we find a team who is willing to pay what we\'re looking for in way of compensation, then that team would be given a chance to work out a new deal with Howard. Once all of these agreements are in place, then the trade can happen. The new team gets Howard at whatever they agreed to pay him and we get picks or players or whatever.

We can choose to remove the tag within a certain time period if we can\'t work out a deal.

Peerless Price went to Atlanta in just this manner and I believe T. Jones came here in similar circumstances. It\'s not unheard of and seems to be a more often used scenario.

That is exactly why he will be here next year and why we promoted sheppard instead of hiring turner. we dont do anything that makes sense!

i posted an outline of the free agency timefrrames under salary cap free agency reference thread.

matthew the reasoning is that he is a high quality sacker that some team will want and sign for 6-8mil longer term. to tag him just to get whatever can be had is better than letting him walk. sd and dal with two 1st rounders both need edge guys and look like good fits. a 2nd or even a 3rd is better than letting him disappear with no return. with 2 other quality young de\'s i can\'t see the keeping him scenario unless he was happy to go inside which i doubt from what comments of his i have read.
